Sweet, this sounds really interesting. Is the civilization actually destroyed during land gen or is it a plot device? Actually, don't answer that, but if you could squeeze me in when you get an opportunity. I guess with the next wave of immigrants if any ever arrive. Oh, and and do you perchance use an Accordion with your moxiousness? A stolen Accordion? Anywho;

Name: Id
Profession: Miner/engraver
Weapon of Choice: Long-sword
Gender: Male

PS: I will understand if he does not get a long-sword what with your inability to actually produce one, but hey, if we readers did not act like Nobles some of the time, where would the challenge be, eh?

Journal of Overseer Fugue
Arrival at Blacksun, Early Summer, 140

"It has been a long day. After our arrival at the eastern edge of the desert, we found a suitable location in a small valley at the slopes of two siltstone mesas. Even this early in the summer, the sun beats down fiercely, the soil is dry and arid, and the grasslands beyond the desert are parched and yellow. Finding a reliable source of water as the temperature continues to rise will be paramount.

While Grimes and Fireheart surveyed the area for wildlife and minerals respectively, I spent most of the day unpacking the wagon with Tamunshin the Crafter, whose company I've come to appreciate over the last few weeks. Farmer Cirino helped with the wagon as well, but he was often distracted by tending to the dogs, who seemed fixated on rutting around under desert stones for lizards. The Architect, whom we've come to know as "Short Dwarf" (he is a bit small, even by the standards of our kin) was drawing up plans for a watchtower which will stand directly over our first mining shafts. After working to secure our food supplies and livestock, Libash spent the afternoon alone... it seems as though something has been on her mind as of late, but I haven't approached her about it yet. We all carry our private sorrows from the years in the wake of the invasion... sometimes it is best to leave them alone.

As our first day drew to a close, we shared a simple meal of roasted turtle and mushroom wine in the shade of the mesas. After some deliberation, we decided to name the settlement Blacksun, in memory of the eclipse on the day the mountain homes fell. Fireheart informed me that a large vein of Iron Ore was protruding from the stone's face... a lucky find indeed, as that will supply us with the weapons and armor I hope to provide for every dwarf before the summer ends. The desert sands, surprisingly enough, are teaming with creatures large and small, so hunting will not be a problem either. The sands themselves will be useful in craftmaking as well... should our elven allies attempt the journey here, I hope to trade them quality glasscrafts, using methods they would approve of.

Evening is now falling, the fireflies are winking like small stars across the red dunes, and most of the dwarves have retired to makeshift bunks made of piled leathers, ropes, and seed-bags... but beds lacking as they are, it will be the first time in months we've been able to rest for a night without the steady rumble of the wagon below us. For that, and for the good fortune that has seen all seven of us to this place without injury, I am grateful."

@ Slinkyfest: Provided the humans want anything to do with Blacksun, we should be able to snag Id a Longsword... that is, of course, if he ever manages to immigrate! That remains to be seen.... but if not, I think his story could be made to work even if he grew from a Dwarf-sprout on site.

Since immigration ranges from limited to nonexistant

Does that mean theres no chance of additional dwarfs for other people?

From the sounds of it, its more of a maybe, if available. I expect that some will arrive, eventually, it will likely just take significantly longer if Solifuge set up in a isolated area. It is haunted, so I don't expect to see Id coming around any time soon. Of course dwarves were never well renowned for their wisdom or level-headedness. Least none that made it big far as I know.

Also, I like the tone your setting up, I sense a great deal of potential within you, moghopper. I hereby state that this fortress shall be AWESOME!! No pressure though, though I mean there is strike-through...

PS: Having Id be the first first generation of dwarf born and raised in Blacksun would be great, though 8 years is a long time all round.

In that case, sign me up for some person as well. Any inital job works.

Name: Katsuun
 - Weapon: Seige Engines/Complex Trap Operator.
 - 2nd Job: Building Designer/Mechanic
 - Goals: Create defenses of some sort, develop inovative uses for dead things. (I'll explain later)

As you can tell, my character is slightly insane. If possible, I would like he/she to be played out as the survivor of another fortress who saw everyone but herself/himself die, and became a paranoid nut in the process.

Journal of Overseer Fugue
A Mystery, Early Summer, 140

"This past night, I awoke to see Grimes standing at the side of my bunk. He urged me to follow him, the earnest look on his face dispelling what irritation I'd felt waking from an already uneasy sleep. Reaching a reasonable distance from our workshop encampment, he informed me as to what had caused his concern.

He had been out past sunset gathering the felled saguaro cacti that had been left to dry in the sun, and as he was tying off a bundle of cactus-wood planks, he claimed to have seen narrow silhouettes slinking around the grasslands to the east. Fearing that a scout from Goblin lands had discovered our expedition, I ran to fetch my warhammer, and he his woodcutter's axe.

The moon was bright and swollen in the sky, and shed enough silvery light to reveal any trespassers. We patrolled the edge of the grasslands and the sparse woods beyond for an hour, perhaps more, but discovered nothing. Finding no evidence of Goblins or otherwise, we returned to our bunks, leaving further investigation until daybreak.

After spending the remainder of the night fretting, I rose with the sun, enlisting Cirino and his dogs to help search the grasslands under light of day. We looked for anything that might have explained Grimes' nighttime sighting; footprints, animal tracks or spoor, and so on, but there was no sign of any nocturnal visitors. In fact, if it weren't bordering a desert, I would be more surprised by how unusually empty those plains seem to be... I don't think I've seen a living thing stirring out that way since our arrival.

I am beginning to suspect that Grimes' anxieties may have made invaders out of trees shifting in the wind, but I thanked him for his alertness. Nonetheless, this brings to mind several pressing concerns. If the Goblins of Omoamxu were to learn of our expedition, it would hardly take an army to defeat us in our current state... even a small raiding party would be our match, unarmed and exposed as we are. I will need to remind Libash that she mustn't delay in forging us weapons and armor, and ore mining will have to wait for more secure lodgings to be dug into the earth.

In addition, come tomorrow, I will invite whatever dwarves are willing to join me in forming a militia. The militia will be responsible for keeping watch at night, rotating in shifts while the rest sleep. Once Libash has completed our weapons and shields, I hope to hold monthly sparring sessions. We must not allow ourselves to be caught unprepared, as more than just our own lives are depending on our survival in this place."

EDIT: Minor story additions to the post, and a few other details.

Like Slinky said, immigration is probable, but still uncertain. I know there are at least a handful of surviving dwarves in the wilderness, but I don't know how the game will handle immigration from a parent civ without a settlement. Either way, Katsuun sounds like a fun character; Goblin Stockholm Syndrome anyone?

I really hope that immigrations without a parent settlement still works. If nobody shows after the first year or so, I'm going to figure that it's not going to happen... and with only 2 female dwarves at Blacksun, we'd be on the road to Birth-Defect Fortress in no time.

Oh, and if anyone wants to post an IC personal journal, you're welcome to do so. I'll try to leave story hooks for folks here and there, and I invite you guys to take the story in directions that interest you. Provided we can steer away from discovering the ruins of an ancient Dwarven soap tower "Slaughtercats, the Bloody Industry", I can probably make it fit too. :P

I can confirm you get immigrants if there is no dwarf civ.  You will not get their caravans though.

Good stuff, keep it up!

Well, we could possibly find a Giant Cave Spider and capture it, but keeping one securely in a fort would be dangerous... entirely possible, but still dangerous. Elsewise, a regular Cave Spider will just meander around the floor of the Arena, occasionally nibbling on the gladiator's exposed toes.

Although that gives me a rather cruel idea... while pitting prisoners of war against beasts, we could make the fight more interesting by releasing hundreds of tiny Cave Spiders on them, and watch as hundreds of little spider bites paralyze them with their cumulative venom....

Also, thats good to hear about the caravans. Here's hoping the world's current dwarf population will support a good bit of immigration then!

WorkerDrone
Swordsdwarf
Full-Time Military (This pretty much means I want to be spit polished until I get Champion status. Likely with the wrestler route, then practice with (Silver, so nobody gets harmed) weapons until I master the art of the sword aswell.)

Glory to the first man to die.

Which is likely to happen with a haunted area.

This sounds fun.  I'll take a dwarf.

Name:  LegoLord, Ballistics Specialist. (male)
Profession: Mechanic, Siege Engineer/Operator, Marksdwarf (cross-trained in hammer use), Hunter (after sub-hero training)
Possesions:  Iron (steel if ever possible) Crossbow and Shield, plate armor
Goal:  Become a legendary siege engineer and operator.  Make at least 12 masterpiece ballista parts.

A cold character, perfectly willing to use his crossbow at all times.

Just so I remember

Heh, I may take you up on the offer of a personal journal. It would certainly be a way to get community involvement up. Though most people are content to throw their ballot in and leave it to the OP.

I'd love it if anyone wanted to post little IC blurbs to flesh out their Dwarves from time to time. If you want to introduce new events or influence the story with them too, that's great- so long as you don't commandeer other peoples' Dwarves and make them commit suicide or something!

Also, LegoLord and WorkerDrone, I'm not a stickler for it, but I was hoping to stick with the normal-ish Dwarf names we've had so far. The story is turning out to be a semi-serious one so far; It's not at all beyond sillyness, and I can try to make anything work (nicknames like ShortDwarf worked well), but it's be nice to have more normal names for the sake of being able to take serious bits of the story seriously.

I mean, I can just imagine something happening to a dwarf that would make for a tragic but epic story, only to realize that the fallen dwarf's name was Big_Sephiroth247.... >_<

Either way, good to have you guys! I'll keep track of which dwarf is who's on the first post, so everyone can reference it.

P.S. Next story bit is forthcomming.

It isn't a generic fucking anime name from some fan-girl game. And just to say, the nicknames for Dwarves are not really dwarven.

And a big fracking howdy do to you as well mister.

Stomps off generally acting outraged.
