coliseum
« on: March 01, 2009, 09:46:51 am »

My fortress needs an above ground coliseum.  I have over 100 goblins in cages and I want to use them to entertain my dwarfs.  Sadly, I just can't think of an awesome enough design right now so...

DESIGN CONTEST

Rules:
  • must be above ground
  • must be at least 20 by 20 squares
  • must be at most 40 by 60 squares
  • I don't have sand, so no windows but i do have gems
  • must be functional
  • maximum of 5 floors
  • I encourage you to add in weapon traps or pillars or something to make it interesting
Rewards:
  • The person with the best design gets to name the coliseum and will be recognized in the POI

You don't have to build it, just design it.  Please submit your design in the form of a picture.

Why not a to-scale replica of the Coliseum in Rome? It's only around 5 stories tall IIRC.

Let's see if you can beat their record for deaths in the ring.

Counting animals/prisoners of war/christians along?

Sure, but they may only die by combat - between each other.

Bonus points if you let in a untrained dwarf and have it come out as legendary!

I will see if I have time for the design of this structure, when do you want it?
And in what format? (drewn, ascii, video of own construction?)

I just want a picture like in paint, ascii is ok as well.  you dont actually have to construct it, just design it.
From now on all my children are going to have to defeat one thief in combat to prove there worth. just like the spartans.

I drew you a cross section to make it easier!

I think I'm going to do this myself. You know, once I have more than 40 dwarves and get booze production going right.

You drew that? Thats incredible! Given the time this has been up, at least.

And to OP, can we include underground jails/holding cells for some of the more unsavory parts of the arena?

basic design:
level -1- : spectators meeting area, ringshaped with plenty chairs.
level -0- : arena floor in center and food stores in ring.
level- -1 -: holding pens below arena floor,
east quart: prisoners cages.
west quart: 'barracks' for gladiatiors. (empty space for sentry point suffices)
south quart: levers room. -switch for locking outside access to E/W areas, -switch for opening cages in E, -switch for allowing access to arena floor from E,W.
N quart: 'escape route' lined with cagetraps to capture survivors.
preferably arena floor is covered in sand or tiled.
optional: raising bridges in arena as archer obstacles.

Dutch people have a greater capacity for what mainstream US citizens call 'liberal filth'.
;)
Let's build a community "below sealevel" fortress.

windmills are a requirement as well as dikes and canals.
and -willow shoes- obviously.

American I'm afraid. I don't even speak Hollish!

Also, make sure to make the coliseum your meeting area.
