I was thinking of something that would really liven up adventure mode, and fortress mode too now that combat reports are going in. We already have semi-megabeasts that rattle off a boast of their previous victims, but what if all speaking creatures could speak up in battle? There would be more room for player sadism as well. Just imagine, tearing the limbs off an elven child while its mother begs you to take her life instead!

What would this go under - the announcements? Interruptive placards like for normal speech?

I'm thinking it would go under normal announcements. No reason to interrupt playing for something that'll only be 1 or 2 lines long.

Something like that.

Well, the thing is, it could be missed unless you're reading them meticulously...

That, and for stuff that's more specific ( "Please, spare my child! I'm begging you!", "CHARGE, MEN! FOR KOGANMOMUZ!" ) it probably would behoove the use of the placard, esp. for fortress mode.

hmm use the placard for announcements like that and give the player an option to respond perhaps?

these shouldn't be announcements: they should get their own scroll screen, as should much dwarf to dwarf chat.

so (a)--announcements, (A)--dialog.

so talking during parties and war cry's would both show up in the capital A menu, "you have struck micro line" would still show up in the lowercase a menu.

<player:Shift+a>
Urist McMiner tells cross bower A: "get offa me, i'm mining here"
cross bower B emits a battle cry!
Urist McMiner: "ooh, microline!"
goblin invader screams in agony!
Urist McMiner stands up.
Cross bower A high-fives cross bower B.
Urist McMiner tells Cross bower B: "get outa my way, i just thoit of som'tin!"
<player:space>
<player:a>
You have struck microline!
goblin invader has been struck down.
Urist Mcminer has been possessed!
Urist Mcminer has with drawn from society!
[/example]

so two menus, reflecting each other.
