Wall Grates?

Hey i was wondering, i am making a wating hole for my meeting area and i need to know if wall grates will filter out animals and let water through? I like nice clean water.

oh, one caveat, vermin-type fish (the type your fisherdwarves catch) will still come through. but not the large animal-type fish like carp. this however wont have any effect on the 'cleanliness' of your water :)

Thats good. However for some reason the water i tapped from a underground river suddenly decided it had pressure and blasted up out of a hole filling my fortress with water... YES IT WENT UP!

It's the other way around; it doesen't have pressure if it IS pumped. Otherwise, it wants to rise up to the level it was at originally.
Let this be a lesson; use LOTS of doors to prevent flooding!

That's actually incorrect; ALL liquids have pressure when pumped.  Pumps can send liquid around u-bends quite easily.  It's magma that only has pressure when pumped.  Water has pressure when it's from a river, lake, or possibly ocean (I have done much with the latter).  I'm not sure, but I heard somewhere that water from an aquifer does not have pressure.
