Nethack, Again
« on: February 28, 2009, 11:27:24 am »

So, I started playing NetHack again after playing Crawl constantly for a while. At first I was just as unimpressed as I was before by the terrible user interface. But then, on my first sacrifice (of a coyote corpse)...

Something magical happened.

And so I'm not abandoning it after 12 minutes. Anybody know how to rest until a monster shows up? Like in Crawl? Instead of slowly pressing '.' again and again while carefully watching the screen?

I love this game, so fun.
To rest, use the repeat command. (I think its "n" or "N" or "N^")

I like NetHack more as a game, but I tend to play Crawl because I enjoy the race/class/religion dynamic more.

That said, if you want your life to turn into neverending combat roll a Lawful character and dip a Long Sword into every fountain you find after you are level 5. Eventually you'll get Excalibur and one of it's effects is monsters are drawn to you. I usually roll a Valkyrie and get Mjolnir when I do that so my games are always epic fun.

Yup. For the Windows port, keypad is enabled and you need to press "n" first, followed by number, then your command. So "n16." will make you rest for 16 turns, unless something interrupts you.

BTW, Giantslayer is nothing to be excited about. ;)

No, you know what this means? I am one step closer to being the artifact master, and having ALLLL the artifacts that I am permitted to have. If I can leave the dungeon with these artifacts, I have done more than win the game: I have conquered a dream.

Glad to see this topic up, as I just started seriously playing this again.
Love the small touches, like when I set off a boulder trap, and narrowly avoid getting hit. The dwarf behind me though? Not so lucky :D

Also like how the gnomes try to ambush me with as many crossbows as possible.

Eew, tiles... But then again Nethack does have way too many monsters that share icon/color combination's, so I guess it makes sense.

Ya'know Inaluct, I hear that if you collect all the artifacts, put them all in a cardboard box, then sacrifice the box, you get a companion. Named boxslayer. And he has a sword. Named boxslayer. You know what he's good at? Naming things boxslayer. Oh, and slaying boxes too, I guess.

But as more artifacts are generated into the game, it is less likely a new one will appear. So I'd want a better one than Giantslayer, if I am to get as many artifacts as possible...

Crossbows are nothing... but a GWTWOD on the other hand...

Those are super rare though, you would be lucky to be downed by one of them. :D

rare

Given how rare such a thing should be those are actually horrifically common...

I just recently tried out Nethack, I'm still really confused.

I had a kitty, and then it disappeared, and I have an inventory, but I don't know how to use anything. I pick up everything automatically, even if I have no concievable use for it. And there are a bajillion commands.

Bajillions of commands.

More than half of them are unnecessary, by the way.
