Giant eagle danger for tower forts
« on: February 27, 2009, 11:21:03 pm »

I have recently started a tower fort and saw there was a sigle giant eagle on the 17z level. I watched it for a while, but it didn't move. It has now been hovering there for 3 seasons. My fort is going fine, but I only have one military dwarf. I am wondering If it is still a signifigent threat?

My current fort, which involves a fairly large tower, was sharing the map with about 6-8 Giant Bats when I started.  I lost a woodcutter or two, plus a hauler, to them, though it didn't have anything to do with the actual tower, until one flew right down into my courtyard surrounding the tower (there were 8-10 dwarfs there, plus guard dogs) and tore off my legendary leather worker's leg.  I ended up with three named, dwarf killer bats, but otherwise, most of them just fly around many Z-level up, out of harm's way.

If you only have the one eagle, it's probably not going to be a huge problem, unless you're building underneath it, or unless you get unlucky. It'll probably kill whatever it does attack, but you can bring them down if you get the chance to catch it with your Military dwarf and a few dogs at ground level.

It probably won't bug you, but be wary of "Interrupted by Giant Eagle" cancellation messages. They have the [LARGE_PREDATOR] tags, so your military dwarves should be able to attack it if they're set to harass dangerous animals if it gets too close. Provided it's near the ground.

Giant Bats, on the other hand, they have [BENIGN], so all your dwarves will think they're harmless except the one that's being ripped apart by them.

Dumik - "Look Kadol , look at that eagle . It's playing with Tordek. Ain't that sweet ?"
Kadol - " Yeah but who's gonna clean all that blood ? "
Dumik - " Hey I found a leg ! Anybody seen Tordek ? "

Hah!  Fun quote, that is.

But yeah.
A single marksdwarf will take down a single giant eagle with NO trouble whatsoever.
At least, to the marksdwarf.
There's no telling how much damage that eagle can cause before your single marksdwarf makes it to the location.
Don't build directly beneath it, and when you get within a few z's of it, put your military dwarf (with a crossbow -hence, marksdwarf) on top of the tower.  If it DOES get lured by the sweet smell of dwarven labor, there will be a hail of bolts for it.
Also provided you enable "Harass dangerous animals" on the marksdwarf.

untrained hunters have a habit of dragging piles of giant eagles into my forts when I expect them to get killed for the good of dwarfkind.  the giant eagle is not really  any threat.  giant bats and other cavern creatures on the other hand can be very bad news

They're probably vermin birds, like blue jays and cardinals. They don't show up on your unit list.
