I mount my horse, but stay near the gate. If these bastards don't open the door, we have two options:

• We are barbarians who have come to aid the enemy troops in their fight against the Earl. We stole these clothes, and we ate the people who originally wore them
• Run.

The guard spots the incoming army and yells. Up on the wall, archers get into position. The portcullis is motionless.

I take up a defensive position if possible, but nothing so grounded so I can't retreat into the castle at a moments notice.

"So, the Earl abandons he most loyal soldiers like this? Hmm."

Inaluct gets ready to rip off his insignia.

"Who's feeling ready to leave? We can do better than following this petty scum noble. If we go, we can do some good; maybe we can fight bandits, and really help people. What we're doing now only helps Earl Thompson. We could move to a city, start an orphanage, really do something with our lives, you know? What do you guys think? Are you ready to make a real difference, instead of being cannonfodder for a petty noble?"
