Allow me to direct people to THIS WEBSITE and then us ctrl+f to find "prison wine".

It is an awesome read, and a great site overall.

I've made jailhouse hooch before, and it gave me one of the worst hangovers of my life.

cactus
That's cactus!

More on topic, I like beer-making kits because I've always wanted to do those kinds of experiments in cake-shop running games or other stuff where you have to have recipes to make shit.

My dad once made beer as a student in the late seventies.
He never tried again.

Why? What happened?

My dad makes really good wine (and not very good applejack), every few years or so.

I'm bumping this because I'll soon be starting to brew my own beer for the year.

I'll be making the following:

Honey Maibock,

Octoberfest Cream Ale,

Russian Imperial Stout.

I'm using MrBeer brewing kits and equipment for the convenience factor.

Next year though, I'm hoping to be able to start brewing more and more from scratch, as I recently discovered a brewing supplies store in my area.

The mystery and horror surrounding Maggarg's dad's secret joint CIA/military experiments to create genetically modified beer soldiers continues to intrigue and fascinate us all.

Should soldiers come in 6-packs? Can aluminum be bonded to human flesh?

...Does fermentation really make everything better?

The world is not ready to know!

Tune in next week for another exciting installment of:

Beer! Homemade stout is delicious. My landlord and I used to brew beer kits in the basement...when I was 17*. It came out to something like 40 cents per beer. So yeah...I didn't get much done that year. The moral of the story? Brewing your own beer will combat our economic crisis and also get you really drunk. And it's fun and delicious.

* awesomely, no ID needed for beer kits.

Home made beer also has some nutritional benefits, as well.

It's not the best thing in the world for you, ofcourse, but it's got live cultures that most commercial beer lacks--having been pasteurized--and the yeast itself is full of vitamin B complexes. Aside from that, it's calorically more nutritious than if the same amount of grain was used for bread instead, it's easier to digest, and it's naturally bacteriostatic.

I thought I'd write a quick post, since I've started having some brewing issues because of the approaching summer weather.

If you're going to brew, you'll do yourself a big favor by closely monitoring the temperature at which you're fermenting. Too hot leads to hangovers, off flavors, and nastiness. Sudden temperature fluctuations are also bad, as they will stress the yeast.

A good target to aim for is 70 degrees Farenheit. 80 or more is bad, while 60 or less is really too cold for the yeast.

It got to 83 yesterday, unexpectedly, and I'm not sure how much my maibock suffered, but as it was the first day of primary fermentation (a process I plan to keep going for a month), I'm hoping it won't be too bad. The brew is now in my little fridge, where it probably should have been, from the start.

At the worst, it'll be a learning experience for me, and I'll report on the results, around July 4.

I have a love for home-made jerky. An unreasonably passionate love that compels me to shell out hard-earned money for the overpriced bags that the locals sell. Perhaps I would also enjoy home-made beer? Your postings have certainly made me interested SHB.

His friend made it in his airing cupboard and it came out wrong. Apparently it tasted ok but gave everyone the screaming shits.

Sounds like something wrong with the yeast...that or maybe a rogue bacterium got into the brew?

If I wasn't living in a cramped bachelor's apartment I'd probably try my hand at brewing myself some stout. yum. Much better than paying for 7.50 + tip for a pint of Guinness at the pub.
