Tower Defense =/= Fortress Defense?
« on: February 26, 2009, 12:19:01 am »

Outside of my fortress is a T shaped building.  Around the building is a maze of walls that the enemy would have to go thru to get to the fortress while being shot at from the second story of the building.  i just finished this project but something is worrying me:  a kobold thief came pretty close to base before being scared off by a dog but the archer i have stationed at all times on the second floor didnt take one shot.  does the maze not work because of the walls?  i thought being on second story would fix that.

Could you tell us what the walls are ? Are they fortifications?

second story point of view

kobold is walking along main road into towards fortress, spotted by worker at area shown, marks didnt do anything.  the + are walls (first floor), the ][ is fortification

kobolds auto hide. You basically need to walk right next to him, post dogs on chains to prevent them from sneaking through. Are those walls made of wood???

EDIT: Also, your archer probaly wont be able to hit enemies who run parallel to that outer wall. What their being a wall in the way. Use fortifications if you want to ensure hitting the enemy. Though that does mean they will be able to shoot you. Also, shooting through multiple fortifications is a difficult shot even for a decent marksmen. Still, interesting concept, my recommendation, build it ALL out of fortification and put ballista's on either side, or facing out of the base of the fort. That will take care if them as ballista's auto fire through Fortifications.

Additionally, your marks dwarfs can't see over most of the walls of your maze there.

Think of it as standing on the edge of a series of deep ditches, you can see down into the first but need significantly more height(or better angles) to see into all of them.

doh.  i think i can still save this fort though.. cant do anything bout the main road but ill redesign the maze to be less "parallel" to the archers. hopefully thatll do the trick.

oh, if i make a third story for archers to shoot from that should give them a larger viewing range theoretically but does accuracy drop to nothing from that high?

It shouldn't do much to harm their accuracy.  I build towers 8 z-levels high and have marksdwarves shooting from the top floor, and I don't notice a difference between that and the 2nd floor.

Instead of walls you should use channels, no cover for the enemies and they still get to go a long way

I'm new at this, so this might be stupid, but I figure it is worth the suggestion.

One thing you could try to do is to make a third layor to the wall.  The build a "roof" over the maze out of floors and grates.  They can shoot through the grates down onto the enemy while they try to navigate the maze and move around to reposition for a better shot.  Granted, they can shoot back, but they could even with a tower.

I've mage previous archer traps out of wall grates, nice, permiable stone latace, that should hold up well short of trolls and mega beasts, who I'd want fasttrackign to my cave traps anyways.

Some people do create alittle maze for their invaders laced with traps of all kinds.
Be sure to place a safety feature if they get in too deep, like a pressure plate( or something) to flood the maze with lava... unless the walls and stuff are made of wood then use the local carp infested river water.lol they would have to start the maze all over again.
Honestly though a maze is not a maze without multiple choices and paths that have to be made, not a single pathway.

Well for one, no.  And also, given most pathing algorithms, there is no decision making.  A* does not make mistakes, so multiple choices wouldn't really do anything in DF.

To prevent this from happening you need to make your outer entrance 3 squares or less wide with 2 chained animals at either side eg:

      d
 d@  @
   |   |
   |   |

d = dog
@ = Chain
| = walls

Plus 1 internets for having a kitten being struck down in your screen shot.

If you want to have a tower of some sort, the best I find to do is have it directly above your entrance and make it 3 stories. Second story is for archers and 3rd is the barracks. On the first, if you want to get fancy, have flood gates that can release your foot soliders.

Don't worry about killing the kobolds, just scare them off and make sure they don't get anything important.
