A skeleton's body (40d) with screenshot.
« on: February 25, 2009, 11:25:15 pm »

Here's what happened, one of marksdwarves was standing on top of my fort's balcony (I'm not sure why) when one of the local skeletal eagles got too close. He opened fire. There were some strange bolt directions with the eagle dodgeing up z-levels, but no real bug yet. He eventually brought the thing down. I think that he killed it in the air (this was about ten z-levels up).

The body seperated into a skeletal eagle corpse, and a gaint eagle skull (the head also fell a bit slower). From my experience, skeletons (including eagles) just turn to bones when dead. Could being in the air mess with this at all?

Was the corpse item literally "Skeletal Giant Eagle Corpse"? That makes it sound like the raws had been corrupted to determine that skeletal giant eagles are just like normal giant eagles, at least when it comes to what their bodies are made up of. The skull could be a result of only the head being an undead body part.

Sure. I'll put it up in a bit (it's on my laptop).
I wonder if it'll rot.

Especially since there's blood, I can only imagine that the game considered it to be a living thing. Have you modified your raws at all?

Since undead stuff is hardcoded, I don't think you could produce this by modding the raws unless you actually created a new creature called "Skeletal Giant Eagle."

Which somebody might have done.
Let's not rule anything out until we get the full report from the reporter, eh?

I've had this problem too, with completely unmodded files.

Good point, doesn't the game just apply an undead template to normal creatures when the environment is haunted/terrifying/sinister? I wonder if you could have an undead version of a creature you added to the raws. If undead is a template, then there should be no problem, but if each undead creature exists as an independent creature of its normal counterpart, then you shouldn't be able to have a Skeletal Whatever Creature You Made Up.

Yeah, it does a template type thing, there aren't independent entries.  In the future when the undead stuff gets converted to a more generalized sphere-linked system, the "templates" will hopefully be in the raws.

That would be awesome, to have a MODIFIER_STANDARD-style thing, where you could have, say, undead, skeletal, possessed, etc. templates for creature variations. We could add in a drunken template for dwarves right after they drink and any creatures that get caught in the smoke when I have to dispose of my fisher berry crop.

Gah. I didn't see the earlier thread (I did actually use seach) and I checked the bug list.

Yeah, it's unmodified 40d.
