n3d halp - Edit: 150->2+5 nobles, trying to survive!
« on: February 25, 2009, 12:19:44 pm »

So I have a nifty little fortress with ~150 dwarfies.

For some reason, my legendary grower couldn't supply the fort with food anymore. Needless to say I hadn't quite checked up on the food stock and everyone grew hungry. Despite my efforts to make it happen, soon deaths happened, and I decided to let them all die and then explore in Adventurer.

Just when there were ~8 dwarfs left, a human caravan filled with food arrived, and I quickly traded them more than double their foods worth to get some. I was finally left with 2 (!) dwarfs (legendary engraver & fisherdwarf), a countess, a philospher and the dungeon master.

So then this siege started... Drawbridges are up, and I have no clue what to do.

Help?

Edit: Screens for the wanting

Remnants of the great murdering, starving, whatever death cause you may have suffered.

Stupid nobles...

I have no clue what to do.

Have fun!

The siege actually left, I was ambushed twice more but trade caravans killed them. o.O

No immigrants so far, plenty of food and my dwarfies are still locked inside.

Nice. Bury the dead and start anew with your few survivors. I bet that engraver has some great stories to tell :) Oh and you might wanna keep that fisherdwarf from fishing for a while so he doesnt get killed in ambush

Bury you say?  ;D Lay in a graveyard to rot more like it. 150 dwarfies dead, I can't be arsed to focus on coffins right now.

Second siege passed out of boredom, I might actually get somewhere.  :D

The good news is that the two survivors were probably the most unpopular dwarves in the fortress (jocks and prom queens always die/go insane first in DF) so they probably won't mind the field of bones in the lower levels.

It's a pity the nobles didn't die, as you've been left with a high percentage of useless layabouts.  If those animals haven't been adopted by any dwarves I suggest you butcher the lot of them while you have the chance (set the fisher to butcher/tanner, probably your engraver, too), as the cats will start adopting people quickly once migrants arrive.

If a noble owns those cats, you know what you must do.  The blood god may have more sacrifices yet.

So... Trade caravan arrived, in the depot, and then a siege started. I hauled up the bridge and waited for it to pass. Unfortunately, the merchants were beginning to go insane (their own military killed them), so I dropped the bridge and figured the military would take care of the goblins before any entered my fortress.

Before I could haul it up though, they ran back inside, leading the goblins to the near destruction of my fortress. My hammerdwarf bravely tried to stop the invasion, killing several in his martial trance, but to no avail. As a last resort I drafted both my 2 dwarfs and was preparing to die heroically.

Then the siege ended. (screen below)

I figured next I would deal with the pet overflow problem.

Thats a lot of dwarfbones. How about making a fancy dwarven ossuary? Make a bunch of dwarven bone crafts, skull totems and put them deep down in the catacombs to remember the dead

sadly you cant make crafts out of dwarfs if you are playing dwarfs, its a tag in the raw files somewhere. take the tag out and its ok though. this fort is awesome.

LOL  you keep killing them and they kept reproducing  :D
You could always pump water into the room, this avoids the animals exiting through the tunnel of water, and you wont have to use a bridge and accidently kill a wondering dwarf or children that go to the meeting area... that was how I killed the immigrate children that can't be recruited for my hermit dwarf, only over magma ( have multiple recordings to those that wish to see entire families and stuff being tossed around.  Did you know that if a dwarf is bridge-pulted into magma they can fly down magma pipe without taking damage until they hit something? One ended up hitting the magma man lol)

Animals are currently being slaughtered by yet another goblin siege.  :P

I'm down to 4 nobles, hammerdwarf bravely ended the previous siege as you know.  ;D
