Climate change?
« on: February 24, 2009, 11:44:59 pm »

A thought struck me when I was playing in a fort where all the ponds had dried up. Will large scale climate-change in real time affecting the whole world ever be implemented? If it is, how would each of the races react to excessive Heat/Cold?

It appears that the depth of ponds and vegetation always start as implied by the biome on embark, despite any actual temperatures. The temperature for grass to die and water to evaporate is below the threshold of the biome changing from whatever you have to a warmer biome.

So really just a local thing. You embarked, the ponds emptied.

Now now, climates changing would be an interesting mechanic. Imagine dwarves mining a mountain chain, thus causing the chain to shrink steadily over hundreds of years. With the height lowering, vapor that previously could not pass can find it's way to the other side where a great desert lies. With the rains the desert blooms into new forests.

Of course, this would take quite a bit of effort. DF would have to occasionally check to see what factors influence the local climate and change rainfall and temperature based upon that. Still, seeing glaciers growing and shrinking during world gen would be nifty.

Seeing elves being driven out of their home as their beloved forest turned to desert would be fucking amazing. I hope this gets implemented.

Soon, we would no longer make mega-constructions of giant statues, or fortresses in volcanoes. Instead, we'd be making ultra-mega-constructions of chains of artificial mountains around elven forests, to create such deserts!

And after this, we create hundreds of small rivers filled with carp and elephants so vile that they even attack elves. We put these in the existing deserts, then remove the chains of mountains to make the deserts forests, which the recently de-homed elves would then populate.

You are encouraging this poster to attempt a diabolical breeding experiment between elves and cacti.
Congrats.

I was sort of trolling, climate change is obviously real, and more likely than not humans have a statistically significant effect on the process.

Despite what the current consensus on Climate Change may be, Al Gore is seen as an idiot to all.

And I want to keep this thread in the realm of DF, and producing things like Cactus Elves.

Heres how I think the races would react to global warming:

Humans: They would probably just move.

Elves: They'd probably try to save the trees, simultaneously dying and failing.

Dwarfs: They would probably not notice until the stone starts to melt when left out in the open. Once they do notice it, they'd probably just dig deeper.

Goblins: they would probably try to invade the dwarfs mountainhomes, and fail causing them to die in the heat.

Humans and Goblins would move as soon as theyr farms fail or move to other crops.

Dwarfs would move as soon they are out of water i think.

Elves on the other hand would change the composition of their Forrest by using more resistant Trees. I this doesnt work they would move also.

Dont forget that a climate change can also mean that the inhebitable area grows by expanding the warm zones f.e.

One problem: Dwarves have access to underground water supplies. Plus if that fails, theres always booze!
