Cleaning up my mess
« on: November 06, 2002, 12:48:00 pm »

All of the key points have now been added.  Things are still very rough around the edges, and in the middle too, so it still won't be out for a while.  I basically have a three page list of crap to go through, but maybe it will actually be worth the wait.  And it just crashed for no reason yesterday...  bugs, bugs, bugs.

I have 33 more little things to do.

If I do one every day, then the next version will be ready before I leave on Christmas vacation.  It has taken longer than I expected, but I think I now have a solid framework to add in magic (the version after this one)...  that's when the game starts getting really disgusting.  Possession... body detonation...  and flames melting creatures into flesh puddles...

I added some files to the submissions page (Zonk's materials and the squirrel).

Just pray to the All Holy (and slightly unholy) Computer Gods for Them to grant you speed in your programming.

Okay, now *I* am one odd person!

I'm changing the way text is printed now.  On my old video card (the one that caught on fire) I didn't have any trouble, but on the new one, any screen that prints text is slow (the editors especially).  This problem is now solved.  You'll also be able to draw up your own fonts if you want.  There are some issues with the new print method that I need to resolve (I had text disappear once, and some of the scroll bars in the editors run backward), but none of that should be too tricky.

What is so difficult about writing "Spelguru"? On every chat and forum board ppl always call me: "sple" "spel" "splegruu" "spleg-dude (new)" and when I use my alias "Lord_Xavier" then ppl just call me "xav" or "X"... It seems as if ppl dont like me enough to write my full name... wonder why   ?

Btw, could someone skilled with the editors tell me step by step on how to make a creature?

Sounds like the Splugorth from Rifts or something...

I've fixed those text errors.  All of the text runs very fast.  I print my letters on polygons now...  so I can distort them or tile spheres with them.  I'll also be able to use the new system to have the game generate fonts randomly, so that every language you encounter can look distinctive.  I've learned enough linguistics over the years to mess with all of the constructions as well, and to store them on a computer...  it'll be fun to add that to the game, although I haven't thought much about how much memory it will take.  If that starts looking bad, I can just randomly generate the language with the same seed every time you have a conversation or read a book in a language you can't translate reliably...

but that's later.  Today, I'm going to try to figure out why the trees disappear when you look at them from certain directions.  Or I'll try to figure out the compactness theorem again...  local lipschitz contractibility seems important, but I keep coming up with annoying counterexamples.  I need stronger conditions.

I have an idea for different languages in Armok. Say that there is two spoken languages in one universe, one is english and one is gubber (or something) and when you talk to someone speaking in gubber he might say "Kneuc ij bul" and that means "Hello to you", then your char might learn pieces of the launguage and when it is written it might say "Kneuc to you"... All the words in their launguage is just as long as their counterpart in English. When you learn bits of their launguage, then you might be able to read the whole message.

But the problem is when the character dies and you might know their launguage in your Real Life head (unlikely, but possible), so between different games, the spellings on gubber (or something) is randomized,so "hello to you" might be spelled "Bahra ku sna" instead of "Kneuc to you"...

Now that I have finished this post, I dont remember why I started writing it, can someone please help me with that?

I have already found to errors in my post, it was suppoused to say: "instead of "Kneuc ij bul"..." instead of: #instead of "Kneuc to you"..."

And the second problem was that I didnt explain it enough.

I also found out why I made the post!

Toady said something about languages and fonts in his latest post...

When is the next version coming anyway? I am getting really sad over here since I don´t have anything fun to play   :(

And now everyone is really quiet... It is at times as these I wonder if anyone actually goes to this forum and that you are all automated responses...

Are there anyone out there? This is an SOS going out across this forum, if you can read this, please post a post now!
