this beetle should be a favourite pet animal of Star Troopers fans.
Wiki states that there exists a children's book called "Bomby the bombardier beetle" published by the Insititute for Creation Research.
Which gives me an Idea. We need to write a children's book about mantis shrimps!
now for the title... Shrimpy, the mantis shrimp? It's not too good, as it can be confused with a regular shrimp.
That larval-stage pic definitely goes on the cover, though.

The Goliath Frog.

The goliath frog, Conraua goliath is the largest extant anuran on Earth.  Goliath frog grows up to 13 inches in body length and with outstretched legs can reach over 2 1/2 feet in length, and weighs up to 8 lb (3 kg). This animal has a relatively small habitat range, mainly in West Africa (near Gabon). Its numbers are dwindling due to habitat destruction and collection for the pet trade.

Back when I was researching animals for my DF mod I ran across all sorts of weird critters I had never heard of before. The variety of animals in nature is amazing. It is very sad that more and more these animals are disappearing. Anyway, here are some weird looking ungulates that I could remember off the top of my head.

The chevrotain aka mouse deer

The gerenuk

The saiga antelope

The siberian musk deer, note the huge fangs!

The tapir. They're so cute!

The okapi... Looks like mother nature ran out of ideas and just mixed a giraffe and a zebra together

The babirusa

The Chinchilla: Possibly the cutest thing on earth.

They come from the Andes, where they live in caves eating dry grass and drinking the dew off leaves.

Their defense mechanisms include a detactable tail, the ability to release fur, urine spray, and of course their powerful teeth.

If the fur of a chinchilla gets wet, it will start to rot, so they must never be allowed to get wet (Gremlins...).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I don't even think they know what they are sopposed to be, with the body and feet of a rabbit, the head of a mouse, and the tail of a squirrel.

I have one  ;D

I had chinchillas when I was younger. Worst thing I ever did was buy the second one. My first chinchilla went from being friendly to being aloof, he was more interested in chinchilla #2. It's fun to watch them take a sandbath. We had an extra large mayo jar full of sand, they go inside and roll around. :)

Found a video of chinchillas sandbathing on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15PZ_84uS2w&feature=related

Thus why they are considered cute.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.
