Yes, I am already doing the Conflict: MEPS Let's Play thread, but it takes time to use my broken computer in order to get it to run, so this Let's Play should be a little bit more funny. I can run two LPs at the same time, you know.

What is The General?

The General is the first game ever produced by NewGame, now known as Elemental Games. Elemental Games is best known for producing the much-renowed Space Rangers series and publish their games with 1C Company, one of the most renowed indie game companies out there.

Haven't heard of them? Well, that's because Elemental Games is based in Vladivostok, Russia.

But anyway, this game is freeware, so you can download it wherever you want. In fact, download it here. The game boasts a superior AI, altough, well, um...

You know what, let the developers speak for themselves.

Quote
2 to 20 states can take part in each game. In the beginning of the game each of the states gets an equal territory and equal resources. You are the leader (or a marshal, as you wish) of one of them. Your goal is to unite the world under your rule, upon conquering all the other states.

In the game process you will have to solve issues of economy, science and military politics. You are going to hire scientists, recruit soldiers and purchase generals. You can put most of your resources into science, or, alternatively, build a militarized state. In any case, you cannot just quitely sit the game through. If you are passive, the others are going to get you!

The largest merit of "The General" is its superior artificial intelligence! Just try playing it, and you'll see for yourself. It is important that the computer is not confined to some certain rigid scheme of play and it reacts adequately to the actions of other players. The computer does not cheat and it never peeks in the achievements of human players, unlike so many other games. It plays so well just because it is smart. :-)

While it is popular, I have not yet seen this Superior AI. In fact, I can't even tell WHAT the AI is doing, much less determine if it is superior. The gameplay is in fact basic, which would mean that the AI would be more responsive, but meh.

In any event, the game's mechanics is, um, seemingly a combination of Fedualism and Stalinism. You control all aspects of the nation (technology and military). Your main goal is to get land, which your peasents will farm for food. You have to feed your own people with said food, of course, and then you sell the surplus food to get the money needed to fuel your rise to power. You get to hire generals, which gain skills out on the battlefield, altough they can get tired, as well as use scientists to learn important advances to help you in the future.

I argue that the game's appeal does not come from having 'superior AI', but rather having some simple gameplay that is easy to pick up, but hard to master. But I haven't exactly played this much, so who knows?

RECRUITMENT:

Here's how it works.
Serve the Motherland
You may sign up as a General to be in my army. When I get enough money, I'll be hiring Generals, and sending them either to defend the Motherland or attack the enemy and gain more land. I'll post your stats when I hire you. First come, first serve.

Serve the Enemies
If you are a traitorous Capitalistic Pig Dog, you can easily sign up to serve the Enemies. I'll mod in the files so that the AI will use your name when they make their own Generals.

Names of the Enemies
The game ships with you fighting 20 Countries, but since each country start off with the same resources and the same troops, well...it would be stupid to see Kenya destroy the United States. So I need some 20 NEW names for Countries. Come up with the name of the country, I'll see what stupid and comedic fluff I can use to justify why we're all fighting over a piece of land.

I have NEVER beaten this game against 20 AI's and I used to play this game quite a bit. Just when you think you are starting to pull away in the lead you get mobbed by 5 enemies and lose everything in 2 turns.

I take back all I said about how the AI is dumb.

Altough this would mean that I can't really win against 20 AI, can I? Oh dear.

Sign me up as a capitalist Pig Dog.  Name him Prince Klemens von Metternich, even though he died decades too early.

Oh, I remember this game. I have never ever managed to win it.

Sign me up as General Trotsky, as either an enemy or a friend. Just remember that everything I did, I did for the Motherland.

Oh dear. It seems my mods doesn't actually work. I'm trying to fix it but it seems that, well, erm...

It also seems that I can't really rename people either. No, I can rename people, I can't rename the Capitalistic Pig Dogs. Don't worry.
