Natural FAIL Disaster
« on: February 21, 2009, 11:54:37 am »

Sometimes when I play DF all I can do is *Facepalm*

Yesterday I made a fortress, my goal was to create a city that would be consisting of skyscrapers, a restaurant, a city hall, national monument, city outskirts, houses and apartements, workshops, factories, warehouses, ect.
Basicly all the stuff you can find in an average-sized City.

When I searched my starting location it was absolutly awesome, it basicly had eveyrthing I wanted.
Marble Flux, lignite and magnetite, lots of trees, sand and no aquifier. It basicly had everything I wanted, besides the temperature was "Hot" it was a perfect place to build a fortress/city.

I played for around 9 years, I was working non-stop, I had 76, most of them who were glass makers, masons and stone crafters.
I had 1 skyscraper, a city hall, the restaurant, big 6 story high warehouse, houses and apartements and a few factories and workshops were done aswell.

Then suddenly I see my pools are starting to dry up, I didn't care much about it because I still had a river.

In about 2 years all my pools dried up, then suddenly I looked at the river and I see dead fish all over the place, first I didn't realise how that could possibly happen as I had no fishers, then suddenly the river started to dry up.
I looked at the grass and I saw that all grass turned into dry grass.
After I had cut all the trees there weren't any trees growing on the map either.

Then, out of nowhere a goblin siege apears(at that time I had 1.7 mil wealth) everyone was basicly slaughtered, miasma and dead rotting dismembered corpses were everywhere.

My population went down from 76 to 24 in a matter of minutes.
I had repelled the siege by asigning everyone into the military.

Then it began, everyone tantrumed, blood was everywhere. The City Hall(the office of my mayor) was covered with blood.

My hammerer(wich was still alive) then tantrumed(after he lost his wife, firends, and 2 kids) and basicly killed everyone in the fortress with his steel warhammer.

He then threw himself into the the river and drowned.

I had 3 people left at this time,
A mason who was now dying after he lost both of his arms, his right eye and his left leg.
A farmer, her entire body was covered with yellow, red and dark grey wounds.
And a cook, wich was sleeping at the time when it happend.

The mason died within 2 minutes, the farmer for some reason survived another 10 minutes before bleeding to death.

My cook(wich lost his wife) was still ecastic and didn't mind that there was miasma, blood and vomit all over the place and continued cooking meals.
I then locked him up in his room until he starved to death.

This is the last time I try to build a city above ground.

Hello!

That is quite an impressive incident you have there. I especially like the part about the cook being spared since he slept through the entire affair - outside people are getting slaughter big time, and inside, he sleeps like a rock :) :)

Anyhow, I recommend trying surface in a temperate biome with lots of trees and vegetation. If you put up defensive walls early on, goblins shouldn't be too much of a problem and your river won't dry up either (your description made me wonder what it would have been like if blood was simulated like water in the game; maybe the incident would have at least helped the fish survive :) :) :) :) ).

However, I really find it interesting that nature fell apart after several years, rather than in the first year. You know, I would have expected the pools to dry up in the first or at best second summer and so on... This game never ceases to amaze me.

Anyhow, thank you for that great tale, and I wish you good luck with your next fortress.

"basicly"?

Anyway, your biggest crime was not recording it and showing us a video.  :P

They're Dwarves - they sleep on rocks, by rocks, in rock, like rocks.

... what?
I'm guessing one end of the river was still pouring water into the map... only it was evaporating to fish-killing levels by the time it reaches the other side of the map. The hammerer could have thrown himself into the deep end of the pool, so to speak. Or the river, being several Z-levels deep, was drying out one level at a time and the carp were air-drowning on the exposed 'shelves' while there was still a little water at the bottommost Z-level. Alternately, Bezerker might have been trying a last minute construction project to save some of the water. Dig a deep pit, drain whatever water you have left into it, and then roof it over... its what I would have done. The hammerer might have hopped in the newly built canal.

This would have been real interesting if Bezerker had kept to cook alive: He should have played solo until new immies arrives and he could start his preparations for the end times.

Seriously... look at what the temperature was doing. Pools dry out in HOT conditions if they are on the high end. But rivers? Hell no. Those flow without issue until you are into ridiculously hot SCORCHING temperatures... the temperatures just short of dwarf-killing heat. Obviously Bezerker's world's sun is transforming into a red giant, preparing to render its planets into burned cinders.

He should have erected a great roof over his city, turning it into a great bunker to keep some remnant of dwarfkind going. New dwarfs wouldn't be immigrants... they would be refugees seeking safe haven from the killing light of the sun.

Say, can climate change over the years, or is it fixed at the start of time?

Well, my fortress has thrived in conditions that leave pools dry year-long. I suppose this is due to the massive water project I was doing and the wonders of pressure.

I'm sure water would not be an issue if you bothers to make a proper water distribution system under the City alongside the waste management tunnels. Not to mention grass seems to grow fine under constructions.
