Goblins are the reason you can count on having iron, at least.  :D

Aye, every game, I seem to find everything else, but iron.  This latest one, I found HFS 8 levels below my entrance.

Thank god for goblinite.

(I'm sorry about posting on this old thread but I just had an epiphany)
(Epiphany is a weird word)
The coal inside does stop burning after a long time, but what about FIRE IMP FAT? It never stops burning, and if you temporarily put [FIREIMMUNE] on your dwarves you could put it in a bin, and it would keep burning, forever and ever and ever and ever...

um... I think you'll need to make an iron barrel for that, and the dwarves should be able to make tallow from it even without heat immune, since they wont stop working til they've taken significant damage from the fire, especially if you pre soak your dwarves, or partially flood your butchery and have dwarf extinguisher (waterfall, extra strength magma, pointy sticks, whatever) to keep your new fortress guards in the making from hitting the booze while still on fire.

They shouldn't be TOO dead by that point, right?

What's this about fire imp fat burning eternally? I have seen this stated several times, but whenever I butcher a fire imp, the fat explodes and makes a fireball, but is instantly destroyed. Except for one time, when it didn't burn at all, just acted like normal non-fire imp fat.

It's on the wiki, it says:

WARNING: Fire imp fat never stops burning. It's also immune to fire damage. Therefore you must crush fire imp fat to stop it from burning.

Haven't had that "eternal burning" happen to me either, I've always seen it exploding into a puff when butchered, expect a couple times when it went through just fine (not sure about the last part, I didn't paid much attention ).

There's another source of iron?  :o
I think caravans cary it sometimes.
You mean caravan guards? Yeah they drop iron when they die.

You don't technically have to kill them.  Just use the Units screen to get into their inventory and set their items to be (d)umped.  It's six types of hilarious to see every refuse-hauler in your fortress mob a caravan guard, strip them down, and run away with their armor/weapons/clothes/dignity.

Does that damage relations?

If not, I should try it.

As far as I can tell, it doesn't make them mad..

The downside is, steel stuff is very valuable, and immigration is apparently partly based on the value of items in your fortress..  if you strip a large caravan naked, you're liable to have a 40-dwarf wave next season.    :o

They wont attack you, but they still will notice the "total money" loss from visiting you
