Bauxite?
« on: February 19, 2009, 10:33:11 am »

Using the custom params to generate worlds, I'm finally able to find sites that I absolutely LOVE.  Magma everywhere, I've found some absolutely AWESOME starting sites.

ANYWAY, the site I'm on, I'm not sure if there's bauxite.  I haven't done reveal.exe (does it still work with the 40d version that comes with Mayday?), but the first dwarven caravan that showed up had none and would not allow me to request it on their list of wants.  Am I already screwed out of using the magma?

Nope.  You just can't use mechanisms to control the magma.  You can however smooth and engrave a fortification into rock that the magma can pass through, and *won't* melt.  Then just make a channel toward your smelters.  You won't be able to make pumps, but that shouldn't be too big of a problem.

You need sedimentary (rock under green trees) layers to get bauxite.

you can use pumps. You just have to be REALLY careful with them.

trade for bauxite, you can check what your civilization has from the prepare screen. i always include a couple bauxite and nickle bars for my magma projects. generaly a good idea to check for basics like bauxite, flux, and fuel stones.

I've never bothered with magma pumps...  I always let the magma's hydrolic  pressure bring the magma to my workshops.

Bauxite hates being in magma. It just hates it. Thus you won't find any near sites perfect for magma projects, but in that human fortress in the plains where you accidentally find a magma pipe and there is a bauxite everywhere, hiding from the dwarves. Then you curse Bauxite for being in this horrible site for magma projects and not in a proper mountain.

Bauxite's seriously overrated and I've done major magma engineering without using it at all. You do not need it.
Magma flows so goddamn slowly on its own you'd have to be a moron to just pop a floodgate and sit around waiting for the magma to ooze through, anyway. Use pumps.
You can even use pumps made out of non-magma-safe materials like wood, as long as they're not receiving magma from a pump on a higher z-level, which would cause the magma to overflow under pressure onto the front square of the pump and set it on fire.
You need to put power into your pumps through the next z-level above or below; and if you choose above, be sure it's above the solid wall-like rear square of the pump and not the floor-like front square if your magma may be under pressure. This'll keep the magma from getting into your power system and burning axles.

If you have any kind of sourced water, you can easily run as many waterwheels as you've got the logs for. Otherwise you're going to have to endure the excruciating expense of filling your whole map with puny windmills.

It sounds like you cranked up the volcanism in your worldgen to get more magma. This destroys sedimentary layers when overdone. There is almost certainly no bauxite in your site, it sounds like your civ doesn't have access to any, and I wouldn't be surprised if there's none in your whole world.

You should ask your dwarven and human caravans for every kind of wood they offer at the highest priority, because you're going to need a lot, especially because without sedimentary layers you don't have any coal for steelmaking. (You're probably going to have trouble with flux, too.)

That's exactly what I did.  Oh well, live and learn how it works :)  I'll play with some of the worldgen params some more and see if I can strike more of a balance.  Thanks for the info!

QFT. Bauxite is only needed for magma-proof mechanisms, and you really don't need that. You might need a few extra pumps (drains, for example), but it can easily be done. You might need to be a bit creative, and your magma will be pressurized, but that's more dwarven anyway. A structure like this in side view
Code: [Select]
#######
# %% #
~~##
is functionally equivalent to a floodgate: powered is open, unpowered is closed. It's just a little bit larger, which is rarely a problem with a bit of planning.

And I'm not sure why everyone cranks up volcanism to maximum to try to get lots of magma: That gets you magma features in the middle of igneous rock, which is really easy to find everywhere. What you want is magma features in the middle of sedimentary rock, really, since sedimentary rock is where all the good ores are (mostly). For that, you want lots of boundaries between high and low volcanism. Play with the weighted mesh settings, skewing towards low volcanism with a spike in 80-100 volcanism. Try 60/5/5/5/25 as a starting place. You'll be happier, I promise.

When you are selecting your civilization before you embark, if you care about bauxite, you should make sure that your civilization contains a region with sedimentary layers.  (You know you can choose which civilization you come from, right?)  If the mountainhomes don't have access to it, then they can't trade it to you.

I never worry too much about getting sedimentary layers on my map.  Flux is important to me (not least because I like to build my castles out of marble), and sand is important, but as long as your civilization has at least one outpost on a sedimentary layer, you should be able to trade for all the bauxite you need.

I came into this thread to answer a question of the OP's that was never even MENTIONED by any of you.  Well done, guys.

Tweak's Reveal module works just fine with Mayday's 40d.
Not 40d2 or up, though.
Actual reveal.exe is ancient, and so does not.

Actually his question was whether or not he was being screwed out of using the magma on his map  ;D

Edit: I was being a moron, please excuse.

are floodgates the only thing that require bauxite mechanisms to be used repeatedly in magma? what about a bridge that will have magma on top of it / falling through it. or floor hatches, etc?

May I have it too?

I am fond for Large Maps with lots of magma, I had one once, but it got deleted!
