Context-Sensitive Engraving
« on: February 19, 2009, 08:06:23 am »

I couldn't find it in search, but it's something hard to really search for, so I apologise if it's been said before.

It would be cool if engraving depended on the context of the room, as well as the historical context of the fortress. For example, engravings in a dwarfs room may be of things that dwarf likes, or in a dwarf's tomb it could focus on events featuring that dwarf.

You know what I mean :)

Yeah i recall this being suggested before, but it doesnt hurt to expand on the idea.

The closest thing i found in the dev notes is this.

Core99, WRITING, (Future): Existing objects (such as wall engravings and blades) need to be able to support writing in any of the in-game languages, and there can be associated skills/professions for this. Requires Core98.

Not quite the same thing, but when this is implemented, contextual engraving could become more interesting.

I'd be more in favor of direct control for engravings, but I'm a bit of a control freak like that. It's just that in some scenarios (i.e. trying to engrave the capstone to a tomb with a picture of the dead guy) it's immensely frustrating to have no control whatsoever.
