Emptying the map of trees due to Archery
« on: February 18, 2009, 11:49:52 pm »

Bolts and crossbows are the machineguns of DF. They kill incredibily quickly, and very few enemies can stand up to that rain of bolts. However, my 5 man marksdwarf squad (with a few hunters who need a few bolts) is eating up my bolts. I'm coming close to run out of bone bolts (which I accumlated a stockpile of close to 3000 with) and have resorted to making wooden bolts. Unfortunately, it's been eating up the trees very quickly, along with the normal demands for wood of a fortress.

What the hell am I going to do?

Kill more things to get bolts? Use less ranged units?

To refill on trees, is to flood the lands, or a small area...

The thing is, this all just 5 marksdwarves that are using up so much, and I've already emptied the map of animals. I mean, the free bones the elfs provide simply aren't enough any more.

Well, if you have anything worth shooting they usually provide bones. Goblins come to mind, as they also carry iron for you.

Problem is, even at 72 dwarves, I'm still getting Kobolds and snatchers. I haven't gotten any ambushes yet.

Snatchers eh? That means goblins can get you. All you need is a bit more wealth. Heck, some people get ambushes in the second year because they make wealth so quickly.

Hmm...I'll just engrave every possible surface.

Goblins provide a net surplus on bolts.

A goblin provides 30 bone bolts. It takes fewer than 30 bolts to kill a goblin even for a novice. Thus, every time you kill a goblin you should actually be gaining ammo.

Also you can recover spent ammunition laying on the ground.

Oh, and to spike your net worth spend time in the food industry ( fine meals = teh bling ) , and the sock industry ( One cloth = two socks ) , and then buy ridiculously expensive things.

Channel out the area behind your archery targets, so when they hit the wall, they just fall down safely instead of shattering. Same with catapaults and AFAIK ballistae. Just remember to make a path to the area below so they can actually recover the bolts.

So

# - Wall
+ - Floor
. - Channel
X - Archery target

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.

The hole has to be BEFORE the the target!!!

Dumbass... Verify!

The design can be further improved by using a drawbridge rather than a wall, this way when the drawbridge is raised it acts like a wall deflecting the stone into the channel below. In the case of an attack on your fortress the drawbridge can be lowered allowing the catapult to fire.

Umm last time I tried that with an archery range they said they cant aim over a chanel. Works fine with seige engins but I think it only works if they miss an archery target.
