Kobolds and Orcs...
« on: February 17, 2009, 07:45:49 pm »

A normal day in dwarf fortress with sieges and ambushes, this began when i was slaughtered by kobolds who litteraly through my traps and door and of course there were some archers too. they killed all my dwarves who was inside the wall and began to run for the fortress when they saw a cat who ran for the food storage (my food storage, dining room and bedroom was abit away because there was no soil nearby and i didnt want to start irrigation just yet.

anyway, they started to run after the cat and killed the 5 dwarves it tried to hide at and the cat of course died to. after this they thought their killing spree wasent enough and charged my fortress, inside was a single marksdwarf which killed 5 wrestlers and 1 spearman before he fell to the ground being filled with arrows when the bowmen entered the door. now my miner rampaged and kill a spearman while 3 bowman was firing at him but unfortunatly he had his heart pierced and lungs. the kobolds fleed and my miner died after 5 minutes (how the hell can you survive with youre heart and lungs pierced).

just when they left a giant siege of orcs came and stormed the gates luckily these couldnt run through locked doors and the first who tried to opened the door died by the traps. this is when i recruit a new marksdwarf and set him up on the wall to kill these orc invaders. it was like target practice but i wondered how that orc could take like 10 bolts direct hit, then i saw him pass out and then i investigated him and saw that he was the Local leader and had all attributes topped and he was a legendary swordsman, my lucky dwarf hit him right in his right eye and then at his neck but then he went almost invurnerable as my arrows just cracked when they hit his armor. now they ran away and i survived once again '' Praise be ironpolishes''.

anyway the purpose of this topic was that i had a question about local leaders, what happenes if i kill him in the next siege? will someone take his place or will the orcs cease their attacks? and is there no way to stop kobolds from running through all of your traps/doors.

Siegers will come whether or not there's somebody to lead them. And I think any weapon wielding member of their civilization is a valid candidate to lead a siege squad, so you'll get gaurds and hunters leading sieges.

Once this pool of potential candidates depletes, the goblins or orcs might stop coming, as people have had fortresses where the goblins have stopped coming.

Personally, I think it's a wealth issue. If people keep increasing their wealth, then the goblins will never stop coming.

The best way to stop kobolds is to chain expendable animals to stand watch for sneakers. If they don't run away after being spotted(and not all will be spotted), you can deploy your military/etc., tho ideally you'll be able to catch them outside your defences and be ablke to lock doors/raise bridges/etc., if you like static defences.

Kobolds are so weak that you can actually (IF a dwarf catches them) draft the dwarf and use him to fight the kobold. Only in rare cases will you get a death, because, usually the dwarf will tear the kobold limb from limb. My mayor, for example, leads the populace of Nutwhip (Yes, Nutwhip wasn't intended) with 5 kobold kills, all with his bare hands.

And thus did the dream of dwarven antigravity fade away, not with a massive explosion or a flood of magma, but with a whimper.

I'm going to be depressed all day now.

and be able to lock doors

Kobolds got something like picklocking so they just sprint through your doors wheater its locked or not and these kobold arent afraid from anything they charged after like 20 dwarfs or something, if youre thinking about kobold thieves this is kobold ambushers, these got weapons.

I figured it was both, and lock picking must be new(for certain values of new - much of my knowledge carries over from when I started in the 2D version :D).

But the rest of my suggestions are valid - chain/rope expendable animals as an early warning device. I'm currently trying out hunting dogs, on the theory that they might be better at spotting sneakers, if only from their increased sight range(?). Spotting ambushers isn't a problem, tho, as they should reveal as soon as they attack the first thing that comes into range, so there I'd use cows or other mostly useless fodder. To stop them until you can call up the military, raise bridges, close level-operated doors/floodgates/grate-portcullis'/etc.

Orcs are fairly immune to crossbow-fire by default (since most of the organ damage that happens just creates pain, and orcs have [NOPAIN]). The tough ones (and, obviously moreso the very/extremely/superorcishly tough ones) are like that too, but they take even less damage and heal faster. I've seen superorcishly tough orcs heal completely from bolts stuck in their limbs over the course of a siege. A simple hit to the eye probably won't even slow them down.

They might stop attacking you for a few seasons, but they will come back.

Well after the siege the leader escaped and like 75% of the orcish army were crawling to the edge of the map ( my crossbowmen like to aim for theyre legs dunno why). after that i needed to reclaim because everyone was tantruming and killing each other. when i tried to reclaim i reclaimed every shop and so on and my fishers went to the underground river were the damn olmmen had respawned and was eating a fisherdwarf, my axedwarfs then cut em to pieces but after that the other fisherdwarf tantrumed because ''lost a friend'' '' witnessed death'' youre a damn soldier stop crying. and because ''was attacked earlier'' and she now pulled up a pile of 25 bolts and aimed for my dwarfs and one shoted each of my axedwarf that was just looking at him because he wasent berserk. after he massacred my army everyone tantrumed so i reclaimed again and this time kill the olmmen directly and its going fine now im using bridges and spear traps that attack everything when pulled.

hopefully the orcs come again so i can kill that ord leader again. im going to check him in legends and see how many kills he got but i doubt he is as cool as Stozu. anyone know how to keep a safe and check legends?

and btw i just discovered that most of the orc are Naked except for a mask, orcs sure know how to be creepy, but they are all covered in blood is it a kind of war painting ?

You have to go into the saves folder and copy the region for the game world in question. Then load the copy of your fort and abandon, and then you can check legends as per normal.

now im kinda disappointed. their leader got one kill and that was because he devoured a human, and the leader almost died of a cougar and the last hasent even been in combat. and i now read that a sole ELF killed a hydra but was killed by a giant afterwards. the orcs fail more than elves, how is this possible. and the leader also married an unknown creature probably a tentacle demon or something.

elves are more dangerous than we think, if they can kill a hydra with wooden weapons then its bad.
