Yes. That's also how you can build floors to separate rooms within the tower, which will function as actual room dividers in a way statues won't.
I thought Statues do.

Maybe they do. I haven't specifically tried it, I just assumed they didn't since they aren't actual constructions.

Of course, they do block engravings on the wall behind...

You can't engrave constructed walls anyway, so that's not a big deal.

When I define a room that has statues in it, it looks like they count as walls.  i.e. they're included as part of the room, but dark teal instead of light teal, so the room doesn't go beyond them.

Incidentally, that's why they'll block engravings if you set them up wrong: the room won't be able to get around them to the engravings.

I dispute the assertion that statues are supports.  Evidence:  Workshop impassable tiles also block room designations (and thus engravings), but they are known to not support things, at least in 2d they didn't prevent collapses...

I feel like I'm being completely ignored here.

Supports are the only buildings (not constructions) that will provide support.  Statues are furniture items.  They will not provide support.  All constructions provide support in four horizontal directions (N,S,E,W) but only upward staircases, up/down staircases, walls, and fortifications carved from walls (rather than constructed as fortifications) provide full vertical support.  Downward staircases will provide downward support.  Nothing provides support in the NE, SE, NW, and SW directions.

Pro tip: (jk, I am no pro), I built my tower on a cliff.  Using this approach I have about 6 Z levels above ground, but only 3 of them are really "above ground".  I put my main exit on the 2nd highest floor so when I say only soldiers can go outside, that also means only soldiers can go on the exit floor.  This protects the stupids.

Modify: Oh and of course the tower goes to about 12 below ground level at the moment.

Can't you make a complex system of pumps for irrigation?

I don't know if you can or not, but that would be pretty dwarfy.

"The humans and elves can only grow food in the dirt, on surface level.  But we're better than they are, we grow our food in caves, without the sun, without even dirt!  And you know what we're going to do?  We're going to take that cave, and put it half a mile above the ground, and farm there.  And not just that, but we're going to make that skyborne cave with floors of glass, glass which is made fertile by nothing less than an intricate series of machinery and a thousand dead kittens!  Beat THAT, sun-lovers!"

IIRC skyfarms have had biome problems in the past.  It might work as long as you don't build it above a mountain biome, but I'm not sure.

I dispute the assertion that statues are supports.

Statues are furniture items.  They will not provide support.

I belive the actual assertion was that statues count as walls for purposes of room designation, not that they provide support. Thus they can be used to define rooms in a tower level without having to rip up floors and replace them with constructed walls(also, worth alot more, which can offset the inability to engrave constructed walls/floors for purposes of room value).
