Tower-Caps growing in my tunnels
« on: February 17, 2009, 04:06:27 pm »

I have bushes and Tower-Caps growing in my tunnels, in areas never exposed to daylight (solid rock overhead). I haven't discovered any underground water features... do these underground growths indicate that I have an undiscovered water feature on my map?

Also (on a completely different topic): What best to do with Artifact furniture like Windows and Tables? Save them for a hard-to-please Noble, or put them in a common room like the Meeting Hall or Statue Garden?

This is probably a bug and i have never heard of anything like it be sure to check unit list after deceased snakemen/frogmen if you do you got a river as they usually fall into the chasm if not its probably a underground lake. put the artifact in your dining room then everyone will be ecstatic. these dining rooms can get dwarves that lost a lover or friend be made happy.

Are these areas dirt or muddied? In that case, I've seen this before. I had a cave river somewhere on the map (unexplored), but I also had a waterfall that included a little bit of underground wet areas next to it. Because of that, I had tower caps and cave bushes cropping up everywhere despite the fact that I didn't know where the underground river was.

I think it can happen anytime there is an underground water feature that is known, whether or not it's specifically a cave river/pool.

You definitely can't just reroute a river underground to make it an underground water source and get tower cap from it. You specifically need a cave river or a cave pool to active the flag that says "hey, start sproutin this everywhere available".

That's just my theory on why I was seeing towercaps without having found the cave river. I think the game decides that you've found it if when the map was generated there is a muddy underground area visible.

I'm not 100% sure of this, of course, but it would explain what I saw and perhaps what blue emu is seeing.

That sounds like it... I do have a nice 10 z-level natural waterfall... and some of the adjacent "wet stone" might be shared with an undiscovered subterranean hydrographic feature.

I also have (on the same map as the natural waterfall and sprouting tower-caps) a mountain which contains a natural cavern, connected to the surface (but without a walkable path leading out) which is 4/7 flooded with water... and full of uglies.

Thats an underground lake. Either underground lakes or rivers will trigger tower cap growth.

Yep. Apparently the solution to the tower-cap problem is to construct floors where you plan on having water underground. Its a PITA, but who doesn't have extra rock lying around?

It certainly seems to work that way with magma and magma forges -- if they're visible on embark, you don't need to get any kind of "You have discovered a magma pipe!" message to activate the special stuff.  So you're probably right, although the subterranean water might be "visible" only in some bizarre or obscure way.

No Footkerchief, the pool is exposed in the normal way.  I had the same thing happen on my first HFS fort.  There was a pre-exposed underground pool.  I didn't get the discovery message.  I just thought I had a cave there, since I got a "you have discovered a cave" message on embark.  Turned out it was talking about a kobald cave.  I figured it out as soon as I learned that there was such a thing as underground pools.  That was with v.38c.

So really blue emu has just confused an underground water feature for an underground feature with water in it.  :P

i once had an underground pool that was exposed from the beggining because the cliffs mustve been eroded during world gen to expose it to the outside world. Maybe you have an above gorunfd cave river or above ground undergrond pool

yeah underground lakes exposed seems to happen somewhat often. i just tried teaching my cousin dwarf fort, and found a site with damned near everything on it, and the magma vent and underground pool were both exposed and right near each other, and the wagon spawned directly between them. surprisingly the dwarfs survived although most of the stuff on the wagon is forbidden and innacessible as the cave crocodiles and lizardmen are wandering around it.

i thought i was picking a safe place for him as the surroundings were "serene". if he doesnt delete the game out of frustration once the fire imps and magma men come out and set the world on fire fighting with the cave pool critters ill have to get the seed off him, that was an awesome site.

also, i use paved roads to stop the cave growths. they seem to give dwares happy thoughts, they use less building materials, and as long as you have plenty of architects around you can make them really fast. especially good for big underground water resovoirs you dont want getting full of tower caps. blocked water pipes are incredibly annoying, the saplings can aparently pop up in any underground water 6/7 or below, and once there they grow happily into fully grown trees even if the water goes right back up to 7/7 and stays that way forever after. ive been avoiding underground water because of this for a while now. i dont think the surface trees are even that tenacious.

Here's a little-known tip: on the screen where you choose where to embark, when you can see the different biomes with F1, F2, etc, the one that's selected when you choose to embark is where the caravan will spawn. In future, try to choose one that isn't in the same place as a magma vent.
