Be aware that it has a difficulty curve that makes DF look like L4D if you didn't play the prequels. I'm still trying to figure out how to get past the bit where i get to use a tank for the first time. Double AT guns, 2-3 armored cars and atleast 10 germans, against my 8 russian fratboys armed with peashooters and a cardboard vehicle. Oh, and the germans can either stealth or teleport as they appear right infront of me on open terrain and then massacre my entire squad before they can fire a single bullet and before i can click on him(coming from an ex-semi-proffesional starcraft player).

Prepare to loose alot and look at the loading screen even more. I have nothing agaist hard games but it does get on my nerves when i'm not given a chance to learn at all and the 90 seconds wait before every attempt is plain retarded.

The infantry advance on you using cover and lie in wait.  They cannot teleport, and if it seems like they are, it's because you aren't paying attention.  This game is nothing like starcraft and being good at starcraft would likely just make you worse at this game because it'll make you act based on that game's abstraction based rules rather than this game's much more realistic ones.

And here i thought the difficulty was just about right, with the majority of my reloads due to bugs/wierd behaviour or not wanting to loose a single man on some missions.
I took the german airport with the americans without loosing anyone and leaving no germans left for the rest of the army to kill

The Russian campaign is the most brutally difficult thing I've played in RTS history. Noone can beat the second mission on hard. Noone.

I like to think of the Campaigns in these terms:
Russian: Harder than hell, you get to defend against giant hordes all the time.
German: Hard, BLITZKRIEGGGGGGGGGGGG
USA: Moderate, you sneak around and then proceed to kill everyone after you get to a certain spot.

So far, other than the horrific difficulty (This is coming from the guy who aced the Russian missions on hard in S:HoWW2), I'm loving this game.

Small tip: If you ever have mines, use them. Mine the hell out of everything, every path, every alleyway. This is the key. Especially on the American missions.

Yeah, I am also loving it, this is definitely the best ww2 RTS. I don't have problems with the difficulty, I love the challenging games.  :)

Hmm. It just dawned on me that this Men of War thing is just a standalone expansion to the Faces of War title. It's still called "В тылу врага 2" here, "Behind enemy lines", except now it's "Behind enemy lines 2: Desert Fox". There was another addon to it not too long ago. Since I dislike Faces of War for its squad-tactics approach, I will not like this one either.

Btw, another case in point on the topic of piracy. The original game, Soldiers: Heroes of World War 2, cannot be played on a Vista system. That is, the russian original game, that had Starforce protection. Effectively making it "abandonware" - the developers and the publisher abandoned it, there is no way to play it on a modern system, and no stores here sell the american version. .

My memory of FoW is pretty sketchy right now, but wasn't it so that you commanded only a squad of soldiers? If so, then certain missions are much more massive in MoW, most notably the defence missions (like the second Russian mission). Some even allow calling in reinforcements like in FoW/MoW multiplayer. They sort of get troublesome to control in certain missions since there's no pause and inventory managment is just as detailed as it was back in Soldiers: Heroes of WW2, so sometimes I ended up with a bunch of soldiers who ran out of ammo and I didn't have time to make them restock because the enemy was attacking elsewhere. A shame they can't handle that automatically, they do most other things just fine by themselves.

I believe that auto ammo pickups will be added in a later patch or a mod. Just look at all the empty space in the command part of the Interface, especially in the 'Use' or 'Weapon' parts.

I've been poking this thing a little bit, and my opinion is a little mixed.

On the one hand, there is some excellent AI programming that causes enemy soldiers to spread out, find cover, and begin inching their way around the flanks of my armor so that they can throw a 'nade.  Furthermore, they don't give away their position by uselessly shooting at the tank.

On the other hand, there is some utterly moronic AI programming causing my own units to dash out of cover and into the middle of the road in order to crouch down and apply some bandages.  They died within seconds.

Then there's the drastic difference between combat situations.  First, we get a basic training setup...  Sneak around and throw an amazingly powerful AT bomb at the light assault vehicle that's bugging your troops.  Easiest thing in the world once you figure out the controls.

Then we get another flanking assignment, which is just as easy.  Move some dude with a machinegun around the side of the Germans and open up.  They'll all die in moments.

After that, there's a mildly difficult area where you're supposed to scare off the German troops occupying the town.  That first AT gun can cause some trouble, but otherwise it's just a matter of taking things slow and sniping the other AT crews with controlled shots from your tank.  Mow down everyone else with the machinegun.  If you're careful, you can get through without losing anybody.

And then comes something where you have to clear out the folks guarding a hilltop.  This involves taking out two AT gun placements (both of which have a stash of HE shells for roughing up infantry) as well as a buttload of infantry and a light assault vehicle.  Now you're screwed.

I still don't know how to elegantly take out that emplacement.  Getting around the AT guns is made difficult by the patrolling infantry, and sniping with the tank got me in serious trouble last time I tried.

For those of you who like screwing around a bit, however, you can place your tank (or tow one of the AT guns with an Opel, if you prefer) over to the riverside road.  AI convoy trucks will routinely spawn and make their way down the road.  If you set up an ambush point across the river from them, you can have some serious fun.

Shooting an AP round into the front of a troop carrier has a good chance of shredding most of the guys sitting in the back.   The other trucks are apparently carrying fuel, and only carry a driver and one passenger.

The most fun is getting them spooked so that they stop and get out of the trucks.  All the trucks will bunch up when they stop, and it generally takes the guys a little while to get out and start running for cover to start advancing on you.

One HE round is all it takes.  Planting one in the side of one of those fuel trucks sets off a chain reaction that will cause a massive explosion as all three trucks are blown sky-high in a raging cloud of flames.  It looks almost like a miniature nuke.

And, of course, the spawns never stop.  I had a whole graveyard of charred truck remains, and the others just kept driving around.  The detour was enough to give me a good couple seconds where they were looking straight down the barrel of my tank's cannon.  I just kept adding to the graveyard until I eventually admitted defeat (one of the tracks had been blown off, all the infantry had been killed, and the repair kit had been used up trying to fix an artillery piece).

Frankly, although the current infantry system is indeed rather nice, it needs a LOT of tweaking before I will consider it "good".  Auto ammo pickups are indeed a must, as well as sharing bandages and a few other things.  Helmets would be another nice auto-pickup (if they do actually do something, and aren't just there to take up space in your inventory.   Speaking of which, what would you use that space for otherwise?  Who puts grenades on their head?  Seems like the inventory needs a little rethinking...)

Actually, I was thinking about how the engine (or some variant of it) could make a very interesting game about a "company" of scavengers in some alternate universe battlefield.  They pick up the scrap left behind by the other warring factions, and keep sticking bits and pieces of equipment onto themselves and their scavenged vehicles.  The packrat style is something I'd like to see more in games...

It's extremely easy to take out the anti tank guns and light tank on the hill if you just take advantage of your KV-1s superior range and firepower.  Just shoot them from outside their range, no problem.

Firing at the area will usually draw some of the infantry out and then you can annihilate them as well.

You don't 'Use up' the repair kit.  It just gets placed into the inventory of whatever vehicle the person carrying it gets into

Well, one second the guy's sitting there and tooling around with the gun, the next second he's just standing there like an idiot and the kit's gone.

Actually, there was one time when I tried to access the gun's inventory by using an Opel...  I found a repair kit.  This was after an unsuccessful repair attempt.  Hmm...

Anyways, never drive an Opel near that gun.  It gets stuck on the sandbag wall and becomes permanently immobilized.  Nothing you can do except blow it up.

Since the kit doesn't get used up, I may have to try some more scavenging...  Just play around with the wreckage left behind until I do something useful.

Does anybody know the exact circumstances required for reviving one of the main characters?  I've had a few times where they'll go down and then I can get them to pop back up again, but there have been other times where the body will just lie there in a completely unresponsive fashion.  I can still select it, and it still acts like it's a living unit (to an extent), but there's no getting it back on its feet.  What's up?

I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about but soldiers will run away from things that are about to explode then dive into a prone position and cover their heads.

Well, they disappear from the unit roster temporarily and it at least looks like all their health goes down.  Then, after clicking on him, he'll get back up and have a small portion of health to go on.  So far as I can tell, it's only happened with the main two characters.  Might be wrong though.

Anyways, just beat the demo.  Ended up losing two guys, but that's still not bad for someone like me.  I just lured the Germans into a line of AT guns that blew them away.  Quite fun.

Sometimes explosions simply stun or knock soldiers unconscious.

Hmm.
I tried it again, after sucking for an hour and trying to figure out how to get ammo from dead German guys and found my new favorite game.

Its good to be bad....

It cost me the other 6 guys I had though, holding off the german horde long enough for my tank to come and flank them.  :'(
