So I finally won the first skirmish mission in the normal difficulty setting, after a gruelling match of about 3 or 4 hours and a few reloads.

Jeez, this game is hard. The damned Nebelwerfers were always wiping out whatever I sent too close, and I couldn't take them down because of the 88 right next to them taking out my airstrikes. Eventually, two guys made it through the carnage and sent a few nades flying into the 88, taking it out. Then I managed to use airstrikes to put the Nebelwerfers out of commission for a couple of minutes at a time, and I used that to push infantry forwards and take out AT guns. In the meantime I was repairing damaged tanks strewn across the battlefield. Eventually, the airstrikes did completely take out the Nebelwerfers and I did my final push to victory.

What I hate the most is buying a tank costing 1200 and having it destroyed in one hit. Repeatedly.

So - I don't feel I'm up to playing competitively, but would love to try out a match or two cooperatively. I'm usually fairly busy, but I'd like to try :)

Does anyone have interest in infantry-only battles?

After all they take more tactics than calliope vs. Counter-calliope?

I'd be free this weekend.

vanilla MoW is all I have unfortuantly.

Warning: by agreeing to play this you give up the right to rage at use of 'stealth tactics'

The US and Commonwealth soldiers are some weird guys. Does anyone even know what "ENEMIES IN THE REACH ZONE!" is supposed to mean?

I believe it's supposed to mean that the enemy is in effective range of their weapons, or just "Enemy spotted," but the game isn't make by native English speaking people, so it's just poor translation.

The best voice acting I've found have been when people aren't speaking English, but that might just be because I can't understand Russian/German/whatever =p

I didn't know it was made by a foreign company. That makes more sense now. I don't have the slightest idea what they mean by "SHOOT HIS SA4!" or some shit when in combat.

The Commonwealth's Mathilda tanks seem ridiculously good in Assault Squad. Just finished a game on Normal difficulty, scored about 1300 kills and 80 destroyed vehicles, lost 99 men and 27 vehicles. How did I do this? I spammed Mathilda tanks. 78 mm front armor for 350 points is just... overpowered. With what they were throwing at me I could simply drive my tanks next to theirs and have no trouble penetrating their armor with my 40 mm cannon.

Yeah, the Matilda is a nice heavily armored tank. In real life it was this way too, like a moving bunker, it was what kicked the Italians out of Africa. The problems the British ran into though is that the tank was too bloody slow and couldn't keep up with the fast moving tank warfare that WW2 introduced. I think in real life the British lost most of their Matilda tanks against the Flak88s that Rommel fielded. The British 40mm gun just couldn't compete against the larger, longer ranged guns that were being fielded at the time.

In game terms, the Matilda is great tank until the German player starts purchasing his heavy hitters. Even before that, the Matilda is slow enough that a good German player can usually assault it with infantry and take it out with a few AT grenades.

Is there anyone out there who still plays Assault Squad 1? It's a magnificent game and I don't know enough people who own it. I play 1v1s with choppy and adwarf every chance I get. I'm on Steam ("GUNINANRUNIN", add me anytime) and it would be great if I could organize a 4 player match at some point.

Multiplayer is the strongest point of this game. If you haven't tried it yet I insist you do.

NNNEEEECCCCCRRRROOOO like a boss, anyway does anyone here have experience with the dynamic campaign generator mod for Men of War?
It's pretty clunky. Somehow worse than Close Combat's campaign mechanics.
