I just bought the game today, along with Red Tide, from Steam. It's so awesome.
I haven't managed to beat the first level again, even though I did in the demo. It's fun when your tank runs out of ammo and you let the enemy endlessly shell it ineffectively while your remaining footmen run and grab an AT gun and wreck shit with it.

I played the beta, it was pretty fun, I had trouble finding someone with whom I could get a decent connection, so I tended to have a bit of a choppy game, I also had a lot of control issues, I couldn't scroll around with the keyboard, and the game was a bit dodgy about selecting things. I only played two decent games, and they both had extensive use of rocket tanks, which I feel really cheapens the game. Also they ruin my favorite part of men of war, the battlefield itself, you wind up with lots of identical craters set like polka dots all over the place, really ruins the feel of a war-torn battlefield layered with scars and wreckage. Those things should really be special units.

Well you could always pretend it's world war one.

We've tried that countless times and until theres a proper trench war map it aint happening unfortunately. making sandbag walls is fun and all, but it takes too long.

On the other hand, having 7 howitzers is good fun.

Just played my first online game, and I sucked horribly. Two infantry squads and a tank in a battalion sized game. Kept waiting for the very heavy tanks to open up before buying anything... My team won though.
Anybody willing to play? I can install any mod.

Have you played the game?

I have the beta installed, but I couldn't find an option to play skirmish against AI? I'll have a better look-see..

Nope. Checked again. Where do I play with AI then?

Hmm, must have hit the wrong game mode. I see now. That is interesting.

Never bothered, because it didn't allow me to add any AI players. I guess skirmish is in fact coop. Hmm, better get some people to play with me then. Thankee.

Played a skirmish game with a friend today. Good fun, though I was simply expecting some kind of Capture & Hold on an empty battlefield with AI opponents.

I wonder if the retail version will feature defense skirmishes? Always attacking is probably going to get old.

No Soviets though, that's too bad.  8)

This is just a beta, so I don't think they have all the skirmishes available =p

I was surprised to see the inclusion of rifle grenades with the UK map. Now if only you could use it as both a regular rifle and the grenade rifle...

I do agree that defense skirmishes would be nice, here's hoping that they make something like that.

Necro!

I just have to post about how much I love Men of War Assault Squad's multiplayer. Screw skirmish. Skirmish is stupid and boring. Multiplayer is where it's at! I mean, all the horrible things of Men of War's multiplayer are more or less gone.

In old Men of War games, it was all about spamming super heavy tanks and artillery. That was it. So dumb. So boring. Super passive play. None of that nonsense here. It's so freaking intense, all about small skirmishes and endless squad based combat all over the place. You get craptonnes of infantry and you need them. Infantry are also super strong with so much equipment. It's all about infantry, light vehicles, and light weaponry. The occassional medium tank or heavy tank could show up and wreck face, but your infantry are more than capable of taking them out no problem. It's just hectic, fun, and downright brilliant.

I mean, my past few online games have been glorious. We're talking endless back and forth, no victor decided until the very last second, kind of deals. You don't feel bad for losing because everyone played like freaking bosses and you feel GODLIKE for winning.

To describe one of my previous encounters:

My friend and I were Japan, enemies were Germans. It was about 15 minutes in and the two of us were getting raped seriously hard. We only had one freaking point left. ONE. Out of SIX! The enemy had 80 victory points out of a hundred and we had 14. This was mostly because the German tanks were so much better than crappy Japanese tanks with paper armor and engines running on jam. There was also a veteran tiger (German hero unit) sitting in the city center guarded by a whole assortment of infantry garrisoned inside all the buildings. We were tearing our hair out wondering how the bleeding crap we were supposed to turn it around.

Now, the Japanese get really crappy heavy units. But this is ASSAULT SQUAD! Japan has the best light units in the goddamn game and we were going to do this crap with just light units! We used our hero points on two Izuzu mortars (a regular truck with a small mortar on it), and two 220mm rocket launchers (it only shoots one rocket at a time, but it's really, really strong). We nuked that freaking tiger with our naval rockets and advanced up the town with our well-trained Japanese infantry. Whenever we could afford it we sent out a light tank or armoured car to provide covering support for our advancing infantry pushing through crazy-hectic street fighting. Grenades, AT grenades, smoke bombs, everything was flying everywhere and the enemy were definitely feeling how desperate we were to take the town back. Mortars and the occassional super rocket smashed down enemy strong points and if we couldn't advance, we sent out tiny strike forces consisting of maybe 4 men to flank and take enemy points way behind their lines. The enemy would similarly try to flank us and would gain ground as well but we started winning the war of attrition on the whole. And then it came. SECOND Veteran Tiger!

This time we were prepared. We had a huge 80mm gun waiting in ambush and we took it out with one shot. The enemy literally screamed in pain in all-chat. And this is where Assault Squad shines. Because the Germans spent so much resources on heavy vehicles, they just didn't have the numbers or manpower to stop our flanking attacks and clever infantry tactics. Japanese losses, while extensive, were also pretty cheap. I mean, pfft, our crappy armoured cars were worth 1/4th that of a Puma. Our entire army was probably worth less than one Veteran Tiger. Also, we used our superior Japanese infantry to mow down the hordes of Volkstrumm (militia) that the Germans were forced to employ when we shut down their heavy equipment. Our superior map control and mobility (mortars on trucks lol) allowed us to press huge gains whenever we wanted to.

And we won. The enemy were literally a hair from victory but we snatched it from them. At the end game screen we congratulated each other for an amazing game and incredible performance (they did smack us down in the early game with their cunning use of heavy equipment). It was just fantastic. An experience like no other.
