I did it! Oh man, it always feels awesome when you beat That One Mission.

Turned out sneaking was the key. I managed to get control over a really nasty piece of heavy artillery and after that the field was rather more even.

I'm stuck on the second mission of the tutorial.  I'm not afraid to admit that.  The first mission, securing and repairing the tank to blow up a convoy, was cool, and told me what to expect of the game.  That I would be commanding no more than a dozen men at a time, and that that would be a good thing, because the soldiers are retarded about avoiding or returning fire, all have their own inventory screen that require constant management, and the vehicles are really finicky to position.

Then comes the second mission, where I have like sixty guys and a dozen vehicles for a "defend the base" command.  What the fuck am I supposed to do with all these schoolchildren?

For the most part, in that mission I just let them do whatever and it worked out well enough.

That said, I lost 99% of my men. But I still won, damn it.

Also: anyone else think Soviet paratroopers have retarded uniforms? I mean, light blue? How the hell is that supposed to camouflage you?

e: oh and, just so you know, that defend the base with 50 guys thing is going to happen a lot. The devs love that scenario to death. Sorry. I find them fun, personally.

It's for paradropping on a clear day. Can't see them against the clouds!

Either that, or they just conform to the Orky style of camouflage.

On the first mission of the tutorial, the one where you had to secure a tank and destroy the convoy, I lost all of my crew sans my commander about 5 minutes in. I went on to defeat the mission, killing more than a hundred nazis with a one man tank crew. I can't beat that damn second mission though.

I actually beat it in one go. Looking back, I still have no idea how, because I still had no idea how to play.

I absolutely despise the "Here's a hundred idiots and there are some enemies on the way, see you in an hour" missions. One, because this game absolutely REQUIRES a ton of micromanagement which is impossible on a scale like that and two because they're FUCKING EVERYWHERE. Russia 1. Russia 2, Russia 4, Russia 6 America 1, America 2, America 4, Germany 2, Bonus 2, Bonus 3 are all defense missions and I haven't finished any campaign except the American one.

Does anyone have a 100% complete savegame? I'm on a different PC now and CBA to play all of the stupid missions again to unlock the decent ones.

Guyz
We need to play co-op so We can beet da missions
I don't know if it will count in singleplayer though.
=o

On a side note: place lots of mines. Unfortunately the AI cheats and has a tendancy to avoid them, but sometimes you'll get lucky.

Another note: your objective isn't to destroy every single enemy, it's a delaying action. If you can disable the tracks of a tank in a chokepoint or something it will block all the tanks behind them.

I have a co-op playthrough of the second mission on my hard drive... would anybody be interested in seeing it? It's like 45 minutes unedited, or thereabouts.

No.. the AI doesn't cheat to see mines?

Well, either the Ai cheats and can sometimes see the mines, or they tend to stop just short of them and/or go around by coincidence.

The AI zigzags a lot. The only blatant "cheating" I've seen was in russia 2(the train that needs defending but would be loaded in 10 seconds if you were allowed to order all of the defenders to help) an armored car(the tiny german one that holds 2 people and only has a single mg34) running over an AT mine, having every breakable part destroyed, have the "fuel tank went boom" effect, kill both crewmen, at least 2 flat tires and then skidding across the entire row of mines on the road, detonating every single one of them.

And blowing up a tank on a road doesn't work. The vehicles escalate in size so you just end up with a Pershing wearing a Sherman as an extra layer of front armor. Or they drive around it.

Similarly, a T-34 does an excellent job at toppling half tracks and armored cars. Too bad the infantry that jumps out immediately tosses a huge pile of AT grenades which typically kills the tank. Tankshocking is hard in this game.

I had that happen to me in CoH once.  I'd heavily mined a road, and then along comes this truck that hits the first one and ends up with the "out of control" stat.  This just means that the vehicle will charge forward at full throttle, swerve in one direction, and then blow up once it hits something or runs out of time.  Since it's gonna get blown up anyways, the devs decided to make 'out of control' vehicles invulnerable.

So the truck hits the first mine, speeds up, hits all the other mines leading up to a bend in a road, and then swerves in order to take out the rest of the mines on the other side of the turn.  One truck, fifteen mine emplacements.

I've only tankshocked once but it was very successful. You just need people covering the enemy vehicle in question so they can gun down everyone hopping out.

Admittedly it won't always work but this is Men of War. The game sees best laid plans like a psychopath with a hook for a hand sees nubile teen co-eds.

Ah, but just one always makes it through relatively unscathed.

So I think the metaphor is rather apt.

I can't remember exactly, but there is a textfile in your savegame folding that lists the stuff you have unlocked... I think? Anyway poke around somewhere and try to find something that looks like this.

You're right though, and that's the reason why I'm looking forward to skirmish mode. No complete bullshit "4 men with pistols try to take on an entire garrison which will call in tanks to back them up, good luck." missions, although it was a definite improvement over Faces of War and Soldiers: Heroes of World War 2. A lot of missions are with reinforcements, and multiple squads. It made it so much better.

Hah, I just did one of those missions. Thank God for AT rifles; it was a pain in the ass, but incredibly satisfying to win.

Highlight would have to be when I parked an AT gun outside the building three officers were hiding in and fired through the wall, through two guys and out the other side of the building.

e: Okay, hilarious physics muck up. So there's this swampy area in one map. Apparently it's been blessed by Satan, because if you try and swim in it your characters die via being sucked under and drowning. But the thing is, once they're sucked in far enough, they explode in the same way they do when you drive a tank over them, sans the blood. If you'll remember, being tanksploded results in the person's helmet and gun being sent flying with serious force. Same thing happened here. Water can blow people up and fling their equipment at terminal velocity. Scary shit.

Oh God, and Kagus? That video you posted a while back where a plane hit a tree? That happened in Red Tide. Twice within a minute. I... I just...
