Jackrabbit: what are you using that requires so much ammo searching? A single soldier's ammo loadout should last him his entire lifetime.
This is true, and it's only been a problem a few times. Chief among them was the mission where you're part of a penal battalion and your guys have like thirty shots with their rifles, but I managed to get through that okay. If what Ozy says is true, and I don't doubt him, then that's all I need, really, because I don't mind getting ammo for one person, it was taking the time to get it for everyone which was a pain in the ass.
Another time it was a problem was in one of the hold the line missions but in that one, much like every other hold the line mission, almost everyone in the first line of defense was dead by the time I could pull back to the second one so the point was kinda moot.
Also, I just played the Russian sneaking mission. Man does it rock. Too bad one of the main characters has the voice and personality of a cheese grater.
There's a clump of 8 or so enemies all in the same spot that I can't remove no matter what. Toss a grenade from any angle, one spots me walking or notices the grenade. Alarm. Use a throwing knife, spotlight guy sees me before I'm close enough. Alarm. Take out spotlight guy, they notice his death. Alarm. Take them down simultaneously. Alarm from absolutely nowhere.
I don't know what game you're playing, I got noticed several times on the first Russian sneaking mission (I assume that's the one you're talking about, it sounds similar) and I never got an alarm because I took the guys out before they could reach the place. It sounds like you aren't paying attention to other people that are in your targets line of sight and near an alarm. It could also be that you're killing too many people. You're not allowed to do that, it is a sneaking mission. Whether or not you think that's an arbitrary restriction is up to you, but it is a restriction and you're going to have to abide by it if you want to win.
Also, in regards to the grenade, first of all the people need to be isolated to prevent someone hearing it and issuing an alarm, and second if you go into direct control and hold down the button, you can cook the grenade and detonate it the second it hits the ground. My favorite instance of this was when one optimistic German pick up the grenade, raised it above his head and it went off.
Hey, Umiman, I think I'm falling prey to the same thing you did. The first time I played the Penal Battalion mission I made it to the hill with eight men left and got slaughtered. Second time, I actually used (God forbid) tactics and commons sense, and was methodical about it, and made it with something like thirty people and five medium tanks.
