potentially kill things where the building material falls,

This doesn't actually happen unless it's a cave-in, although that might have been what you meant, and it IS a real hazard when deconstructing floors.  But the falling chunk of stone that you get from normal deconstruction is harmless.

i have in the past used falling bits of wall or floor to kill and stun invaders. once i undermined a huge section of 1 z level stone hill and left it standing with only supports. i left a kitten in the dead centre as bait, and when the goblins showed up i hit the lever and sent the whole hill down on top of them. everything directly underneath was dead. ahh, how amsuing it was finding out the mechanics of dwarf fort.

i also have had stacks of floor in a big shaft above an entrance hallway, held up by supports from above. i can trip each level one at a time, so its like a multishot cave in trap. only works when you have a lot of stone above your entrance hallway, or you build a big tower. and you cant tunnel under your entrance hallway, or the cavein will go right through your fort. fun times.

Hundreds of perfectly fine humans who have had countless numbers of limestone blocks fall on them care to disagree with that dog's death.

 Wait, that doesn't sound right...

Well I demand to differ.  I deconstruct stuff all the time and never have deaths.

World-gen people have the ability to build floors on top of walls, and deconstructing on-site buildings when you are building a fort in a ruined human town can cause potentially lethal collapses unless you plan right.

 Floors on walls: Perfectly fine.

Walls on floors: not alright, thanks to the Dwarven Safety Commission.

Dwarf: Wots this? A wall on a floor? I'm shutting this place down!
Human Trader: What of the magma moat that creates a magmafall in the dining room?
Dwarf: Is the dining room legendary?
 Human Trader: i think so...
 Dwarf: Then it's alright.

It's true that a 1 z-level drop probably wouldn't do much, if anything.  But these blocks dropped multiple z-levels, and landed on the dog with enough force to badly wound it the first time, and finish it off the second time.  So even though it may be very rare, there's still the possibility of it happening.

Differ.

It's involved a lot of deconstructing over multiple z-levels.

And how many people got hit by objects during said deconstructions.

I never said it was common, just that it could happen.

Quite a few, actually.  One stone hit a caravan's donkey.

I don't know what happened then.  I know that I saw falling blocks kill that dog, but you say it wouldn't happen, so one of us has a game that's screwing up :(

Hm.  Well, I did have cave-ins off.  Maybe that somehow disables falling item deaths.

There's no floor under the walls of your house, if you could see under them.

thats not quite true.
Maybe other walls were added in after your house was built?

Every wall on the first level of a house has a floor under it.  Its called the foundation.  In a pier and beam house, there is still a flat, house-wide surface upon which the walls are built.  On the second story of houses, if a wall is on top of another wall, then there may or may not be a floor.  If a 2nd story wall does not have a wall below it on the first story, it will generally have the "floor" of the second story extending underneath it for support so that wall doesn't start to droop in relation to the rest of the room.

A wall consists of a bottomplate piece (normally a 2x4) nailed into the foundation/floor or screwed down with massive all-threads on the exterior of the house, especially in tornado country.  Upon this baseplate the studs are aligned and then a header is put into place on top of the wall.  Usually there is about a 1.5ft space between levels where joists are placed for load-bearing necesities(ack sp? on that word?)/ ducts/plumbing/wiring/etc.

If you walk into any 2 story house under construction and look up into that space, you will see the "floor" of the next level, but not any of the walls from underneath.  To locate the walls, look for where romex electrical lines and plumbing are travelling between floors.

If you live somewhere besides America, this may not apply.  I have heard that all houses in South Africa are made entirely from stone so that might work out different.  Dunno.

GMcG

ps: wow, had no idea I was gonna write that much.  I guess you can tell I do a lot of work in houses during construction.

In general European houses are made out brick / concrete, wood is rare and expensive to insure (although testing has revealed they're usually more fire resistant than most stone houses). Basically you build the walls up, and stick wooden, steel or concrete beams in the walls to put the floors on (look at any ww2 film / game). Internal non-load bearing walls may or may not have been constructed on floors though those on floors tend to be built out of wood with plaster pressed wood exterior covering.  Generally the outer 4 walls are load bearing.
I think it's comparable to most high rise buildings in the US (skyscrapers are another thing entirely of course).
