I've been into the game for a little over a year now. I've been playing Ultramarines (yeah, yeah, laugh it up...), but now I'm switching over to Daemonhunters.

While I appreciate the fine design of the PC game, I can't play it.  It's an RTS specifically designed to destroy turtling, and I just don't roll that way.

Hm, can you explain why you can't roll that way. I mean, turtling is a very legit strategy in real wars, but...

I mean, I can't roll without turtling.  I'm a Turtler.  Turtling is what I do.  I can't play an RTS that actively punishes me for turtling.

BTW, if anyone here is up on Warhammer news and rumors, is there any word on when the Imperial Guard is due for a new codex?

Many non-turtlers argue that it is impossible to win when one turtles. The reason being that you spend so much on stationary targets, such as turrets, that you cannot spend money on building units that can attack the other base, thereby forcing the battle into a stalemate.

Since you are a Turtler, you likely will be able to prove these non-Turtlers' arguments wrong. I hope.

Back in the day (as in, 2E days) I played a pretty bad-ass squad of Orks.  Still have the units here, stripped and ready to be repainted when I can stop my hands from shaking from all the caffeine I drink.  It's just a shame that:
1) With the newest set of rules, my crack-squad of retarded doppleganger goffs and gretchen are pretty much useless, and most of the old heavy weapons units are tweaked in usefulness to... not be so useful.
2) No one down here plays 40k, and I don't have the time or the money to keep the hobby up.

But boy, do I love looking at some well painted models.  There's the nerd in me coming out...

Depends on the game and economic system.  If resources are finite and can be recovered, or are truly infinite, they turtling can work by just outlasting your opponent(s).  Let the enemy waste forces on your defenses, then ride out after the map has been drained, or your own forces are big enough.  That certainly the instinctual logic that makes most people turtlers in the first place, and in some games in can work.  Total Annihilation comes to mind (Seven Islands FTW).

In other games where resources are infinite but hard to reclaim, or truly finite, it's pretty damn hard.  In games where the designers just don't want people turtling (Starcraft) it's not a viable strategy at all.  Take all of the above with a grain of salt, as for all my love of RTSs, I lost a lot, when I bothered with multiplayer at all.

I'm a turtler. I always lose. There may be something in this 'turtlers can't win' idea after all. :P

...But seriously, I really suck. Also, why so much focus on Orks and Space marines(for the tabletop)? I'm ALWAYS the evil race, but somehow the heretics' whiny voices put me off chaos. Ergo, I play Necrons, and support Tyranids.(yes I play PC)

I could buy a village in Burkina Faso for the money it'd take for me to buy a 40k army.

I'd totally play if they started casting army-men type little toy orkz. They'd have to cost like 10 cents each, though.

I have a Space Marines/faux Daemonhunter army, but only because my former friend strongarmed me into playing an army that'd be weak to his.  >:(

I'm not too acquinted (at all) with the Warhammer 40k games, but I suppose it be a pretty cool game since their are so many famous nerds (Brian Clevinger and the Penny Arcade guys) that are into them.

PC, SPESS MAHRINES!

Tabletop, Dark Heresy. Gotta love the Peril of the Warp chart. Also gets really fun when you take the list of mutations from "Tome of Corruption" from Warhammer Fantasy RPG and apply it to Dark Heresy.
