Non-economic rock?
« on: February 16, 2009, 01:54:03 am »

Checked the Wiki. Nothing on how to obtain it.

I need some of it. Where would it be obtained?

Find some rocky piece of map, [d]esignate some area for digging, so that your dwarves with minning labour enabled can start working on it, and there you go! Unskilled miners will dig out more squares without leaving rocks behind than skilled ones. If you don't have any obviously rocky targets on your embark area, dig down a few levels(by [d]esignating staircases). There's always plenty of rock 1-2 lvls under the sand.

I assume you're following, or at least have looked at, the "Your first fortress" page on the wiki.  Essentially, what you'll need is at least one pick, at least one dwarf with the Mining labor (v > point at dwarf > p > l) enabled, and a rock wall.  If the site you embarked on doesn't have any rock walls, you'll need to dig down first.

To dig in general, you use the (d)esignation menu.  (d > d) will make your dwarf just mine in the current layer in the shape you designate.  Use (u), (j), and (i) for up, down, and up/down staircases.  Once you've placed a staircase, you'll need to go and place a corresponding staircase in the proper place.  For instance, if you've designated a down stairway, you'll need an up stairway directly below it (Remember, > and < navigate z-levels.  Shift-5 and Ctrl-5 on the numpad also work).

Alright, thanks so much.

And to clarify, I have looked at the "Your First Fortress" Page.
