Nope.

Only way things get names are by killing named creatures.
That's right.
All civilized creatures have names due to being, well, civilized, so killing even a baby or a child that's not notable gets an animal a name.

Not true - I've had chasm critters sitting alone on isolated shelves get names after a while in past forts, and there weren't any flyers, even if the pathing issue was fixed.

In that case, what tag should I put into my orcs that make them have names automatically rather than having a bunch of "the orc, 206" in my View Kills section of a dwarf's profile?

Probably...

...All creature than are [INTELLIGENT] or [CAN_SPEAK] get names without having to kill anyone.

The thing that confuses me about dorfs is this. Dorf 1 dies in an avalance or somesuch. Dorf 2 is friends with dorf 3 and dorf 1. Dorf 2 berserks because of his friends death and kills dorf 3. also a friend. W. T. F.
Clearly you've never been drunk.

Also worth mentioning: legends mode does not like civ creatures that have no names. They still get names later but they mostly appear in lists as UNKNOWN CREATURE and "so and so married an unknown creature" and my megabeasts have tons of kills of "unknown creature."
