Naming the locals.
« on: February 15, 2009, 11:52:16 pm »

I know that your dwarves will name vicious creatures after a murder or two or three.
Once I faced a Giant Bat named "[something] the Genius of Carnages", a bat that killed 16 dwarves of mine. (The mechanic who finally killed the bat was given that same title by me).
I have seen, when embarking on human settlements, children killed by carp and sturgeon and seeing those nasty fishy buggers named for their killing of sentients.

However, there were 6 Batmen hanging around my current site, having never gotten into a scuffle since I first moved in about a year and a half ago. Yet all of a sudden, my dwarves decided to name all 6 of them one after another.

Why? They didn't kill anything. Those wild creatures deserve no names!

Is there a certain time limit (1.5 years?) that if a creature survives to on a map, they get a name?

The thing that confuses me about dorfs is this. Dorf 1 dies in an avalance or somesuch. Dorf 2 is friends with dorf 3 and dorf 1. Dorf 2 berserks because of his friends death and kills dorf 3. also a friend. W. T. F.

I've had that happen with batmen and cave swallowmen myself.  I'm pretty puzzled by it myself.

Once tried to conquer Earth, and succeeded! Too bad it got really, really boring, really, really fast.

One day, we shall all look back on this, and laugh. Sorry about the face, by the way, and the legs, and the eyes, and the arms. In fact, sorry 'bout the whole body.

I'm quite sure I've had this happen to giant rats and naked mole dogs, both of which don't fly. My theory is that even if the creature hasn't killed anyone significant it still can attain a name if the dwarves are "exposed" to it for a long enough time. Flying creature being much more likely to stumble into your dwarves, are simply just more likely to get names. Also, weaker, less-mobile land citters are more likely to get slaughtered before getting a name anyways. BTW, I don't think creatures named this way will be hostile when tamed, but its all still a hypothesis, not a proven theory.

If a creature stays on the map for a long enough time, the dwarves may name it. Or they may not. It's kind of random.

But for the most part, this only happens with chasm, cave, lava and underground water creatures. Never heard of it affecting anything else.

my dwarves once named a Gremlin just because he sat there at the lowest floor of the chasm. its probably that the dwarfs name something after a while. maybe this is something about thoughts. a dwarf that like gremlins maybe gave him the name but thats just a theory

I think if the animal kills other things, like deer or whatever, it might get a name also. Ive also embarked on chasms to see prenamed creatures; dont know what that means.

Nope.

Only way things get names are by killing named creatures.
That's right.
All civilized creatures have names due to being, well, civilized, so killing even a baby or a child that's not notable gets an animal a name.

 Note:

 Killing things gives entities titles.
Being around with no name eventually gets them a name. It's not like pets have to kill something before being considered a pet.

Note the above sentence refers to the fact that every pet has a name.

I've always imagined this being like the boogey man. He never killed anyone, noone has gotten a clear look at him, but everyone knows he lives in that cave and makes the weird noises we hear coming from it at night. It's just a way to anthropomorphisise the feared and unknown. The creature is both real and a myth. Like the way the gobbos in LOTR knew of Shelob the spider.

(except Shelob preyed and killed things, but there were lots of other creatures that rarely interacted with the races but earned both name and legend. You know what I mean)

All civilized creatures have names due to being, well, civilized, so killing even a baby or a child that's not notable gets an animal a name.

Not exactly. All creature than are [INTELLIGENT] or [CAN_SPEAK] get names without having to kill anyone. If your goblins (or orcs, or whoever) [CAN_CIV][CAN_LEARN], they'll attack you but none of them will have names until they get a kill.  Some of the leaders will already have names from historical kills.

In that case, what tag should I put into my orcs that make them have names automatically rather than having a bunch of "the orc, 206" in my View Kills section of a dwarf's profile?
