Water Pressure? Nonsense!
« on: February 15, 2009, 04:58:52 pm »

So, I decided to do a little project of my own.
THE UNDERWATER UTOPIA!
...sort of.

But, in order for it to work, (Totally self-sufficent) I needed a way to farm. And in order to farm, I needed a muddy surface. And in order to get a muddy surface, I needed water.

I embarked on a ocean-side fort, with grand dreams of testing out my new prototype under-water farming room on the bottom of the ocean.
What I didn't plan on, was water pressure.
*Starts smoking pipe*
I remember it perfectly.... a day in timber, or day-abouts.

I had just finished the water room and drainege room (I would fill the farm room with 7/7 water first, then open some floodgates leading to the huge drainige room downstairs.) and was eager to test it out.
The moment I pulled the lever, I knew something had gone wrong.
Sure enough, when I checked back down at the farm room, I realized that I had forgotton to install a door on it leading to the rest of the fort.
...
It was sort of a "OOOOOOOOOOOH SHIIIIIII-" moment, but in slow motion.
...
The water pressure was so bad (good?) at the bottom of the ocean, that the farm room instantly filled with 7/7 water, then the rest of the fort 3 seconds later.
The water had come out so fast, that it actually shot out of the main shaft, like a fountain.

The lones dwarf outside thoughts of suacide had quickly been driven out with the realization that there was now a fountain with mist next to him.

Classic. always when you plan something great a little thing like a door just ruins everything just because you didnt place it  :D

Yeah...

I once flooded the only way into my fort. I had embarked on almost-sheer cliff face (3d version, just lucky). Instead of digging downwards into it, I decided to dig upwards so I could have windows and such later on.

About 30 z-levels above the bottom of the cliff was a cave river. I found it by digging in laterally from the cliff side. This was good, as it was a Scorching climate without any other constant water supply. I thought I'd be clever and make my own stream along the valley, using my cave river as the source.

You can't channel all the way to the edge of the map. The game won't let you. But I figured if I just build a wall around the artificial stream, the water would just overflow and fall out at the open end, near the edge of the map.

I had everything prepared, and I breached the river. Sure, there was a bit of water piling up on the corner of the valley, but I had expected that. What I hadn't expected was for the water to keep piling up. Water doesn't flow off the edge of the map right, apparently.

So my dorfs were stuck inside, but at least they were dry. Problem is, the valley was useless. The cliff was nothing but mountain biome, so no trees. My miner had died from breaching the river to begin with.

But at least I did learn that Frogmen splatter nicely after falling 30+ z levels.

I once flooded my fort with a well.
Normally underground wells work quite well if you're careful, and I was indeed careful.
What I didn't know was that half the river would freeze, and pressure would build up in the unfrozen part.
The part where my inlet was.
This meant that when it froze, water was forced up the well and it became a fountain.

I for one would very much like to see how that under the ocean fort looked like. I wouldn't even know how to begin on something like that...
