[40d] Strange mood materials taken away

[Crosspost from fortress discussion]

I know about a couple strange mood related bugs, but something happened to me that I've never experienced or heard about before:

My hunter had a strange mood, claimed a workshop and gathered his materials just fine. Now, as soon as he began work on his construction, dwarves flooded into the workshop, took everything he was working on, and took them back to their respective stockpiles. Now the fey dwarf is 'working furiously' on nothing, and has been doing that for quite some time now. More time than would normally be necessary to make an artifact. I think he may be stuck this way forever.

Update! After a few months he went berserk. Too bad!

Were any items forbidden?

I've found that this is actually a very good way to control which artifacts are produced. I can abort artifacts I don't want made, such as a possessed dwarf claiming a crafts workshop. Those artifacts tend to be useless trinkets, whereas artifact furniture, weapons, or armor is all awesome.

I wait until the dwarf has gathered all of his materials and begins working. If I don't like where things are going, I just forbid and unforbid the items in the workshop. This removes the [TSK] tag next to them, such that they are no longer involved in workshop production, but then they can later be picked up by haulers and dragged back to the stockpiles.

Awww. I was really hoping this would make a materialless artifact, much like the Roast or the Large.

"This is a Floodgate. It is made of masterfully worked. On the item is an image of a groundhog in."

I did this to a dwarf in Bustnut by mistake in hopes that I could get him to use a better base material than value 1 stone.

I ended up destroying the workshop he had claimed by collapsing the cieling onto a corner of it from above. The workshop was smashed, the dwarf was sent cascasding down 4 levels of stairways and instantly went melancholy, and sat there and died because nobody administers health care to injured doomed dwarves.

It's an abortion at the cost of the dwarf, but it's worthwhile if one of your peasants grabs a wood log and 3 pieces of raw adamantine and heads to the craftsdwarves' shop. :P

Easier to simply forbid the items in the workshop. An item being used has a [TSK] tag after it. Forbidding it instantly removes that tag, clearing the task it was assigned to. Go ahead and reclaim the items and other dwarves will haul them back to the stockpiles. You don't even need to destroy the workshop, but it would probably be a good idea to lock the door in case the dwarf goes berserk.

Of course, forbidding the base material (i.e. the first one) tends to have odd results.

I had something similar, but not identical, happen to me recently.

1) Gem setter gets strange mood
2) I forbid all rough and cut gems except demantoids and blue garnets
3) Gem setter claims jeweler's workshop
4) Gem setter carries rough demantoids to workshop
5) Gem setter begins working furiously
6) I unforbid all my gems... and during the process accidentally forbid and then unforbid all demantoids (from the stocks screen)
7) Gem setter works furiously until going berserk next spring

This may be related to bug 000209, currently marked "doesn't reproduce". Most likely caused by accidentally forbidding the material being worked on, but it could be something else (maybe because the gem setter's daughter was killed earlier, or the mood crossed the year boundary from winter to spring?).

That is absolutely identical to the method I described for aborting strange moods, the only difference is that you used the stocks menu to forbid the items, whereas I did it by selecting the workshop. If the items are forbidden, their current task is canceled. That current task is making an artifact. However, as the workshop itself wasn't destroyed or anything, the dwarf will continue to work on nothing until he goes insane due to failing to meet the time limit for making the artifact.
