Super Noooob in need of rescue!
« on: February 14, 2009, 03:51:58 pm »

As stated I am a super nooooooob   :-[. I don't have a clue about computers atall. Basically I wanted to know if anyone can help me to use ore.exe. I downloaded it from the utilities part of the wiki but don't have the faintest idea how to use it.
I extracted the file and double clicked it. It loaded up and closed down again. Nothing happened.
Any advice is welcome please. Remember I am a noob so please use simple language. Also i am on vista if that helps.

It probably wasn't ever updated for 40d.  The locations where DF write things to in the memory change with each release, and so programs that allow you to modify the game, like reveal, need to be updated with each version.  Make sure ore.exe is compatible with 40d.

Yeah, seems that you're out of luck; I don't think any of the tools where updated for the new version.

In general, you're going to want to learn a little about .bat files and command line. Unless Vista doesn't have those.

Thnx. I think I'll just give up.

Who needs  a huge block of platinum and adamantine next to their fortress anyway? (wipes tear from eye)   ;)

Are you serious?
Of course Vista has those.

Who needs a huge block of platinum?  Nobody.  Platinum is only useful as a trade good.
Who needs a huge block of adamantine?  Nobody.  The one place you can find it now is the one place it should ever be found, period.

Exactly. Useful for trading off for pretty things like huge Steel Battle axes that I can mangle nasty goblins with.

Huh? I haven't got that far yet. I've never mined out adamantine.

?
That was my point.
Adamantine is unavailable except for that one location, and that one location is the only place it should ever BE available.

And if I'm not mistaken, food is worth more than platinum.

You can't make furniture out of food.

Well, not unless you use reactions, but that negates masterwork bonuses.

Trading.
Not furniture.

Platinum is useful for furniture. Not just trading.
But does he really need a utility last updated for, IIRC, the 2D version to create a block of platinum for FURNITURE?
Not really.

Hey guys good news!  ;D

I have decided that DF is far too good a game for me to cheat it and so have totally given up searching for a utility to help me in my criminal efforts! :D

Nah, cheat for magnetite and make everything out of iron ore. Add a reaction to make magnetite beds. Either that or microcline, but that doesn't require cheating.

Huh? I understand why I would want to make my whole fortress out of platinum (dribble) but  what...Microline! Possibly the most boring material in the game and iron is also probably the most boring metal in the game 'sept copper.
