Two words:  Obsidian sniper towers.

Woah, you guys have a lot more ideas than I thought you'd have. It's a pity I'm still crap at this game though :-( Ya think I should upload the save so others can see what they can do with it?

Fire from the Skies device, aka God judges you...

Every tile of the floor in the sky is a hatch cover made from a fire proof material. Every hatch cover is linked with a lever.
In the deep, there's a z level entirely carved, full of levers. Pull the right one to open the right hatch. Fire from the skies, the death ray of the past.  ;D

Using this idea, you could build a magma skyway using walls and floors to create a channel 1, 2, or 3 units wide, and several (3) z-levels tall. It would have to be filled one z-level at a time, because your goal is to pour water over it and construct an orbital ring of obsidian above the edges of your map, and dismantle the remaining constructions, leaving the ring attached to your center tower by a single, channelable tile.

Then, in the event of a siege, you could order the ring to "make planetfall", and since it is a solid chunk of wall and counts as natural stone, it will crash to the earth intact on tile-by-tile basis, effectively having a high chance to instantly create an unbreachable perimeter wall around your fortress. Due to geography there may be a few spots where the wall is passable unless you made it quite a few levels high. :)

*Bonus: Construct the 3-wide-3-tall donut with the top center tile missing, and fill this with hot magma so that when the orbital ring crashes down, it also bleeds magma out over its sides when it breaks apart. Would this work?

I think we're all missing the most important part about the obsidian tower.

It must be CAST. No wimpy constructions!

And I like two of the above ideas. Make the Fire from the Skies device... but make it so that you can selectively bomb certain regions. Wouldn't be too hard if you're making the entire sky out of hatches anyhow.

even cooler- make a giant dragon statue that breathes magma.

even WAY cooler- make a mold of a castle out of bauxite, fill it with magma, and start pumping in the water.

If it's constructions, you don't need bauxite.

ive been slowly making a world that would be really cool for adventuring.

so far im still on the first fort, which now has 200 dwarves, a giant 30 z level dam along the cliff which has farms and passages around and inside, a huge labarynth of catacombs with caged creatures guarding it, a mazelike set of catwalks spanning multiple z levels that reqires navigating to get to the long route to the room with the captured megabeasts, which has to be passed to get to the glass box under the water in the dam full of adamantium artifact weapons.

some of my other ideas include adding stuff to the underground roads, and making some of my own through the mountains using long skinny embark sites.

this giant obsidian tower inside a lake of lava sounds awesome. i have 2 volcanoes very near each other in the middle of a huge forest with a 2 level aquifer, one of them is so becoming this act of insanity.

my only issue is that people tell me that pressure plates dont work in adventure mode in this version, even with traps turned on. this means no timed spike floors, no randomized bridge mazes, and no life or death computerized games of noughts and crosses.
