Civilization 2 troubles
« on: February 13, 2009, 10:10:39 pm »

What I'm experiencing is a dilemma. I really like Civ 2 however, the disk I've owned for years now has very very small scratch on it. This scratch doesn't damage my game experience, but the uninstall wizard for it won't work! I'm thinking about using my damaged disk to put it onto my new computer, but I'm worried that I then won't have a way to taking it off, so I will forever have to keep the harddrive space for it allocated towards it.

Is their a way of uninstalling or removing something from your computer something without a built-in uninstall wizard?

Yeah.  It probably installs in c:\microprose\civ 2, or c:\program files\civilization 2, or something.  Just delete that folder from Windows Explorer.  But be careful what you delete, it would be bad if you deleted your whole c:\program files!

Then you'll need to go to start->programs->whatever folder it installs to, right click on that folder, and delete that.  Now it won't show up in your start menu anymore.

My whole family and beyond sincerely believes I'm the most tech savvy they know, but I know that I'm just a little smarter than the average person. I'm completely stupid with alot of computer things.

Actually it's a good thing you got used to using the uninstall, as that usually removes registry entry's the program creates and helps keep it from getting bloated. Most people I know just delete the program folder and are done with it.

A lot of times when you uninstall it, it will still leave empty folders and save files lying around - if you really hate clutter, the best thing to do is uninstall and then delete any folders or start menu shortcuts you can find. I usually go all the way and run a search for any files on my computer that contain the games name to make sure it's dead.

wait, what?  Civ 2 is 500 meg, tops, right?  That's .1% of a decent hard drive... not even worth worrying about

I'm trying to install it. It keeps complaining of "insufficient memory" which I don't know how to fix.

On closer inspection, the small scratch is actually a small crack, but it's been there for a long time and I've never had problems with it before...

Alternatively, you could download CCleaner.

What operating system do you use? Civ 2 is pretty ancient, and things like "insufficient memory" appear to happen with ancient games... though it installed on my cold computer.

Anyway, the uninstaller not working isn't a huge deal. Wooty does more or less what I do. CCleaner as Cajoes said or some other registry cleaner would kill the loose ends just deleting it would leave behind, I imagine.

You definitely don't have to worry about allocating space for it eternally though. Anyway, shouldn't Civ 2 only be 20-30 mb at most without the music? The music is CD audio or something, totally uncompressed, and made up for most of the size. That and/or the wonder videos...

Man, I got a real Civ 2 itch, and it's sitting right in front of me and I can't get it.

I remember acquiring this game, and reading through the MONSTER of a manual twice in order to understand it completely.

And even then, I was too young to understand how stupid the AI was, so I was always played on the easiest difficulty and always with the mindset "play EXTREMELY conservatively and peacefully as you build up your technology to maximum over several hours, and then go on an unstoppable rampage with super weapons". I remember one particularly long game where I was trapped on the tip of a continent, cornered by some indian guys, and I just grinded in that corner with only 3 cities until I could nuke the world.

After seeing some old videos of it being played, I wanted to go back to it and redeem myself for my wimpy playstyle in the past. It's frustrating that I may not be able to.

I just dug out a very old disk of Civ2, but I mostly played the "WW2 in Europe" Campagin in Civ2, either as Axis or Spain (and usually, both sides tries to annex the other). And I sometimes cheat.

Not sure if that would make a good Let's Play. But at least there are fans of Civ2, so hm.

I remember playing to the year 3000 on a Civ I (yes, the first game) save file that my dad wasn't using anymore. There was no scoring anymore, and I quickly got defeated about 17 years after it turned 3000, but it was a pretty epic accomplishment for me in my mind.

The Civ games will always have a fond place in my heart since they introduced me to the addictiveness that is running my own empire.
