Will artifact mechanisms survive immersion and operation in magma even when made from non-lavaproof materials, I mean, of course.  I happened to get one in a fortress where I don't have any lavaproof stone on hand at the moment, so I was curious if it could be used to that end.

Only if they are made from bauxite.
Or iron, or steel, or...

Remember that artifacts aren't necessarily made of materials the item is normally made from (I've got a green glass bed in one of my saves, for instance)

2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

I know gem furniture and bone floodgates (and so forth) tend to be made sometimes, but I don't know that I've ever heard of a mechanism being made out of not-rock.

Backup your saves and try it - and tell us what happened - I would like to know this too.

That could actually make use of my wooden bracelets and things. Let's see how my legendary marksdwarf reacts....

They aren't.  I've lost one to magma once.  It was a pair of plastic chain leggings.  The wearer walked under a magma trap when was triggered.  I save-scummed because that's just a crappy way to lose an artifact.  It was also a community fort, and the magma trap had gone off uncontrollably due to me forgetting match up my raws.

I would assume that they can also be crushed by bridges, though it would be difficult to get one in such a position.
