Final Fantasy Tactics is (IMO) a particularly un-fun implementation of auto scaling.  Never quite got how it worked but it seemed to be something like:  "Wow, those mages are beating me up!  Let me level up one archer really hard, so she can smack them down...  Uh, now all my enemies are the same level of my archer, and my other guys are lagging behind.  Damn."

It was sad, especially given how genius it was in every other way.

Everything said so far has been fairly thoughtful. However, there is one correction I'd like to make. In Oblivion, all the enemies do scale their levels up as you get more powerful, but they all have a level cap at which point they stop scaling up, so there is a legitimate sense that, eventually, you're a demigod among men.

But the men are also demigods. There has been situations where an average run-of-the-mill guard can drop dradenic armor when he dies.

I think that has something to do with guards
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Which is entirely possible, if not frequent. All npcs have a tendency to pick up things of value off corpses.

Actually NPCs never used anything from corpses, and guards didn't close Oblivion gates (The only people who even seem aware of the OMGWTFBBQHAXDEMONINVASHUN are your character and the NPCs directly related to the main plot, unless you decide to ignore it).  It's just that the NPCs were scaled in both abilities and equipment, so if you had a high level character you'd have bandits running around in Glass and Daedric armor.

Actually, they just stop spawning and then the enemies which aren't capped at whatever level you've crossed start spawning instead (with the exception of mudcrabs and rats, which keep spawning to annoy you and die in a suicidal attack). And since there doesn't seem to be a highest level cap (I remember this being considered a "mistake" in Morrowind), you're only ever a demigod to rats and mudcrabs.

Guards had a level cap of 25 if I recall correctly, some of the Daedra also had level caps at around forty or so, the higher level ones that is. You can experiment with this. Crank your level up to 100 or whatever, and attack an Oblivion portal. There will be Daedra that are far weaker than you.

Also, late through the main quest, when you're wandering the wilderness, you can rarely stumble across Imperial Guardsmen fighting Daedra in front of a portal, into which they may run. And yes, people do occasionally pick weapons, armor, and food off of dead enemies. Often, they won't use anything but their default equipment, though.

I remember a fight late game in which daedra followed me into a city. A daedra had a weapon knocked out of his hand, and a civilian picked it up and used it against the daedra, and carried it around on his hip for the duration of his life.

In addition, there is a mod, which I never used, which expanded the Imperial legion's response to the portals.

There are lots of mods.  That doesn't make the initial product any less mediocre. :-\

Although Far Cry 2 could be made pretty cool if it was possible to mod it... but it's a Ubisoft game.
