I actually hope that games go more in a 'this is a thematic and control' sequel, rather than a 'this is a literal next episode' sequel.

Kind of like I hope they keep making alien movies and never ever have ripley again.

How exactly is Far Cry 2 similar to Far Cry 1 in any way that isn't shared by every other FPS with large open areas?

Large, open world, beautiful lush jungles, relatively open path through it.

Mind you, I stopped Far Cry 1 about the time the mutant ape things showed up...

If you read the journal it basically says something like

  I can't remember the exact words but that's the basic idea.

Large, open world, beautiful lush jungles, relatively open path through it.

Mind you, I stopped Far Cry 1 about the time the mutant ape things showed up...

Just Cause had all this... and aircraft, and a magic MDK-like parachute, and a grappling hook, and the ability to use the grappling hook to para sail then land on a vehicle's roof and hijack it.

OpFor, ArmA, and a few other games whose names I don't remember all had large wide open worlds.

You know what I would like to see. An FPS in the vein of the original Farcry, but open ended. Yes, you would have goals. Need to rescue the person you showed up with, find a way off, and perhaps make it unprofitable for the merc forces to work on that island. Maybe a secret lab that you could blow up. Enemies wouldn't simply respawn but would be flown in on helicopters and dropped off of ships. That could be abstracted unless you are actually at the docks or heliport when they come in. You could rescue prisoners and eventually take over compounds from the mercs. Rig traps for troops and vehicles. That would be a good FPS, and honestly what I was expecting to a degree with this one. Obviously that isn't gonna happen anytime soon.
