Finding the magma pipe
« on: February 10, 2009, 06:25:20 pm »

I'm starting to get a bit concerned about DF's priorities. I used reveal and savescummed so I could find the magma pipe on my map without hunting for ages and ruining my fortress location with exploratory shafts. Upon loading the save, I dug down where the pipe was. As expected, the game paused and came up with a message...but it wasn't for having found magma. Nope, there's absolutely no mention of having found the pipe, in fact - the dwarves were getting excited and paused my game because "You have struck Microcline!"...microcline on the outer wall at the top level of the pipe ::) To be honest I'd have cared a little more if they'd been excited about striking chalk (beside the microcline) or basalt (on the opposite side). The blue stuff's going straight in the stuff that they were supposed to tell me I'd found.

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

As far as I know, Reveal has a major downside considering magma. Because you already "found" the magma, the "You have found magma.", or something like that, message doesn't appear and you will never be able to build the special magma buildings. I don't know whether this problem has already been fixed, but I read about it multiple times.

i can bullseye magma and all other features, such as hfs, chasms, etc. 100% of the time without any sort of modding.

Let me tell you, I have had no such luck with the Depot method. Not to mention cave rivers are much too small to hit with that method!

Although things like magma pipes and chasms are quite large, and there is little surprise they can be pinpointed.

True, except that I did specifically mention savescumming (so that the map wasn't revealed - I just remembered the location of the magma pipe and could dig down into the darkness to find it). It's something I've done often enough for magma-based experiments so I'm well aware that said bug doesn't affect me. I can build magma buildings and stuff, I just never got a notice about it...and loading an autosave from embark has shown why - I could build magma stuff from the very beginning, even though I couldn't see magma anywhere on the map at the time. Must have been because it was one layer underground or something, because this has happened to me in the past as well (or, rather, I got a message about finding a magma pipe when I made an exploratory shaft that missed exposing the pipe by one tile)
