..both me and my girlfriend occasionally describe things in DF-style "Rowan was ecstatic lately, he did unspeakable things to a radiator lately". Usually at the least appropriate time.

Well, orichalcum is stated as being super-light, dwarves already practically worship adamantine, and maybe mythril could be the strongest?

"Adamant" means "unconquerable", so adamantine should be the strongest.

...I don't play any other 'strategy-sandbox' game, because it's not so awesome and complex like DF.

And I bookmarked all nice gems/stones on wikipedia and regularly read those articles.

Haspen admired a finely written article about gemstones on Wikipedia lately.

... I have a rudimentary understanding of geology and metallurgy.

... I've learned to appreciate fantasy as a genre, even if I read relatively little of it.

... I desperately want to try D&D.

... the SimCity series just isn't as much fun any more.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

... I prefer crossbows over regular bows.

I have always thought crossbows are awesome, as you can actually aim and fire them without steroid-like arms.

... I don't buy or play mainstream games anymore. They just seem pointless and boring. Which is odd, since DF has no actual point and can be described as 95% boredom/repetition and 5% pure terror.

I hear if you combine them with dwarven syrup you can make rhesus pieces.

In Greek mythology Adamantine was the hardest rock possible, often described as 'a flint like substance' it was generally used in hero's swords and in divine chains, gates etc. In the middle ages it came to mean diamond as the hardest thing they knew of, so it really should be te strongest and hardest rock type.

Well, actually, you don't need steroid arms to fire a bow, it's all in the technique, the great thing about crossbows though is that you don't use as much energy to hold it, it takes less training because it is really as simple as pulling a trigger and the fact that it doesn't shoot in an arc so it is easier to judge where the bolt will hit.It is also much smaller than a bow of equivelent power and that means that you can fire it from all sort of places that a bow cannot be used in.

The main advantage of crossbows is their ease of use; you can mass produce them quite handily and hand them out to militia, with only a week or two of training required to really know how to use the weapon properly.

This means you can field huge armies of archers at very low cost, which can be a serious tactical advantage.

This is also one of the reasons why Guns are the current weapon of choice; ease of use.

Yeah, a peasant (worth almost nothing) with a crossbow (not worth very much) had a chance to take down a knight (worth shitloads + years of training) back in medievil times.

Though spears were good, very cheap, I think Robert the Bruce used them to take down English Knights.

Chance? A crossbow made out of paper with a paper bolt has been used to kill a person, a medieval crossbow could kill a knight easily if they used it right and targeted the right place and a modern crossbow can pierce 2-3 inches of iron plate(again, if you use it right and aim at the right place) and you're telling us that they had a chance to kill a knight? They would kill the knight no questions asked so long as the bolt hit the target...

Not true actually, this is a common myth, a knight in the most uptodate armour was invunerable to nearly everything on the battlefield, a crossbow bolt wouldn't faze them unless you were very lucky (or just shot the horse) its the same as people who believe that knights were vunerable to handguns, to begin with (up to about the 1540's) plate armour (espically gothic and italian) could easily withstand a muskect ball, all good ones were 'proofed' as evidence of this, anyway my point is that a crossbow bolt would in no way easily kill a knight!
