Clothes already act as armor and padding for that matter. It would have the advantage of not wearing down though

Cloth armor was necessary for absorbing blunt force. Gets a yes from me, but I'd like to see a layering system and good blunt damage first.

Blunt damage in the next version is sounding really good, with "squishy" materials accounted for, piercing/slashing weapons reverting to blunt damage if they don't pierce the armor, etc.  Toady posted a bunch about it in the NFotF thread a month or so back.

Yes... I totally knew that. All along. I was just testing you. >_>

Still, layering system. Shouldn't be too hard to put out, but it's necessary groundwork.

Do you mean layering in terms of the game tracking multiple clothing items layered on top of each other, or in terms of dwarves being smart enough to layer up appropriately?  They do the latter to some extent but it'll likely get a working-over with next version's squad updates.  Maybe they should get unhappy thoughts if they have to wear gambesons and plate and all that on a hot day.

Eh, that's not so bad. I've fought in plate in 100 degree weather before. It's really the helmet that gets you. The nice shiny plate actually keeps you a bit cooler, since it reflects so much of the sun. You do have to drink a bit more then you would if you weren't in armor, though.

Baby and child-sized clothes would be something.. as it is they run around naked even in the middle of winter.

I mean I would like the ability to say to my military, "Put on silk undergarments, then a cloth gambeson and pants, then your chain or plate armor." And not have them put them on in random order, or forget a step. As far as I know, we're not getting that next version, but I could have goofed again.

It's not clear whether we'll get that or not.  There's an item for "More robust weapon/armor settings/handling," so we'll see I guess.

Carpets on floor, only if you can layer constructions on top of each other.

Furniture can already be put on top of constructed floors.

All you really need to do to get carpet working is to make it a building that doesn't block other buildings. Which would of course necessitate a "next building" command like we currently have for when there is more than one entity on one tile.

"Put on silk undergarments, then a cloth gambeson and pants, then your chain or plate armor."
Yes. New thread!

You can't carry a wall into battle.

...yet.
It needs wheels first! Or a row of battledwarves! Or a herd of chained warbears!  :D

What about Dwarves getting happy thoughts from seeing other Dwarves wearing nice/new clothing on their outermost layer?
Urist McLadyBeard is only going to look attractive while her silk clothing is on the outside; beyond that, any dwarf is only going to be looking at her armour.... are dwarves attracted to each other, or does dwarven romance centre around masterwork chest plate?

I have noticed a rather mixed reaction with microcline, but what do people think of olivine?
Oh I love olivine.  I think dark green furniture makes the fortress tasteful.
Wait, what?

This may be repeating something from another thread but... maybe a length of cloth that has been decorated in some way could be built as a tapestry, for extra room value or to record the fortress history (especially for those weirdos who reject the earth and build upon the ground ::)). Multiple lengths of cloth could be sown together to let the tapestries span multiple z-levels, too, or a cloth be fixed to a window's frame to make curtains.
