punching through the aquifer

a single layer aquifer can easily and conveniently be punched through with a cave-in. do you guys consider this to be an exploit?

considering it usually kills at least one of dwarfs, I don't think its an exploit.

It does not kill dwarves if done correctly. Doing it correctly, though, requires 3 stone mechanisms.

I usually just set a no traffic zone on the bit thats falling and the area under it when I do a cave-in. Which is pretty often 'cause I'm lazy.

It doesn't even have to require 3 mechanisms, if you prepare the cave-in with your usual square, and then on one level create a "handle" sticking out about 5 tiles.

Executing the cave-in by digging away the last tile of this handle usually boinks the miner into the dug-out area beneath the handle, in worst scenario.

The only "exploits" that exist in DF right now;

1. Cooking booze.
2. Atom-smasher drawbridge.
3. Excessive trap use*.

4. Cooking seeds
5. Cooking fat
6. Constructed walls as invader-proof defenses
7. Channels as invader-proof defenses
8. Invader-proof defenses
etc.

I don't consider cooking seeds/fat exploits. Cooking seeds is a bit of an "in case of emergency, break glass" option; it produces food, but puts a strain on your farming output.

Fat/tallow is just another edible part of your kittens.

Both of you forgot quantum dump-stockpiling, though.

Could you explain how the cave-in method works? The explanation in the wiki fails to be explanatory.

Sure.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now, channel out the stairwells as your dwarves move up, and finally, channel out the last piece holding the whole thing up, but make sure your dwarf isn't standing on the floating island!

it will leave you with this:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The 2x2 ground tiles above the aquifer in middle are completely safe to drill through, as the dirt walls you dropped from ground level are not water absorbant.  You can build whatever structures you want at ground level etc. to get your dwarves to reach your new stairwell.  Note that this is obviously not the only method.

edit:  I've edited a few times. my first try wasn't very clear.  Oftentimes with dwarf fort I have an easier time doing than saying.

i do not use quantum dump as a stockpiling feature, but i would be extremely annoyed if this feature were completely removed from the game.  I hate stone clutter and this is the fastest and most convenient way to deal with it.

Same here. Once in a while, I unforbid whatever I've dumped so my masons can build towers and whatnot with it, though.

Let me make sure I understand what's going on:

From the side, you start with this:

Code: [Select]
_OOOOO
_OOOO_
777777<---aquifer, dug out and already flooded.
OOOOOO
[code]

Then you remove the last connecting tile, leaving you with:

[code]
______
_OOOO_
7OOOO7
OOOOOO

So you're moving non-aquifer tiles down to the aquifer level, right?

Cool, I didn't know about that one. Doesn't look like it would work for more than a single layer aquifer unless you've got lots of soil layers above it, though.

yeah, you need twice the number of layers above the aquifer as aquifer layers. But still, getting a large single-aquifer-layer area is quite helpful.

I'm mixed on whether it's an exploit or not. I use it quite a lot, but with an acknowledged goal that the dump stockpiles are only temporary - I need to either chasm the rock or turn it into something or spread it back out eventually.

The reason I'm mixed is that I would expect a legendary digger to be able to do with the rock what I wish. If a novice can dig and sometimes leave nothing behind and sometimes leave something, why can't a legendary digger choose to do one or the other? The quantum stockpile seems to balance out that shortcoming.
