I always loved capital ships... especially from various shows and anime. Mecha anime in particular; Gundam, Gurren Lagann, etc.

What we need is a Romance of the Three Kingdoms in Space, for that. ROTK usually has you capable of playing from a lowly officer in some backwater town to an emperor of half of china. We need that kind of versatility in whatever Capital Ship game comes out. Playing as a fighter, the captain, a crewman... it'd be a lot of fun.

Include the ability to walk around capital ships and have shipboard combat and it would quite possibly be the greatest space based game ever made.

X3 is very sandboxy as well, but you really need to the patches and mods for it to be actually fun and playable. I played it with keyboard + mouse just fine.

really? i bought it a few years ago when it first came out, and was very excited.  but i couldnt get through the training dogfights with keyboard + mouse, and the online community suggested it was unplayable without a joystick.  im not the best gamer in the world, but im a wing-commander and Falcon and Privateer and Freespace and A-10 and Aces over Pacific fucking veteran, so i supposed i should have SOME ability to play a space shooter.

maybe i just have to try again.  or, you know, finally get around to buying a joystick.  my current computer doesnt have a port to plug my old thrustmaster into :(

It's Aces of the Pacific and Aces over Europe!

Also, to throw something out there.  There's Skies of Arcadia.  A Dreamcast JRPG that got ported to Gamecube and has flying ships.  You can walk around inside of your main ship, whichever that happens to be during that part of the story.  You collect different crew members and can choose which are active.  You also get to make a hidden island base, and there's a turn based ship to ship battle system.  It's also got magic though so some might not enjoy it.

Eh, Skies of Arcadia isn't really capital ship. It's turn based ships using slots to choose what attacks are used against the enemy ship.

It's still a good RPG though.

Depends on your definition of RPG...  It's a good game though. :)

What about Infinite Line/Space?  That Nintendo DS game coming out?

Which, the game or the mod?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge_Commander - this page has most of the relevant links. The mod I'm talking about is Kobayashi Maru 1.0, but there seem to be extensive mods about stuff like Battlestar Galactica as well. The game's very graphically pleasing, and controlling a large battle from the bridge (that constantly shakes and has sparks flying every which way when you're under fire) is really great.

Here, look at the damage done to this poor thing:

Well, to some extent the Galactic Conquest mod for battlefield 1942 had most of that (i.e. people manning different turrets etc. on the bridge), though the whole space combat was a little bit improvised. In principle you could also board enemy ships and fight man to man, problem was just that moving capital ships usually made things to laggy to do that  :)

So... Tribes with moving bases?  Yeah, most obvious game idea ever.  I don't why no real company has made it yet.

Well, Battlefield 2015 sorta has that with Titans. I don't know what it would take to have them move, but the basic idea of just battling between several large battleships (each controlled by one team, for example) should be fairly attractive.

You should try out that Eternal Silence project I mentioned - it seems to be exactly that. And using the Source engine.

Last time I checked, the capital ships couldn't be piloted or anything, and it was all fighters/bombers.  There seem to have been updates since then, things might've changed.

There is a mod you can get for free on Steam, but you need Half Life 2, Day of Defeat or Counter Strike to play it. It's called Eternal Silence. I don't know alot about it but my friend plays it alot and I just checked out the description for it:

Quote
Eternal Silence is a science fiction mod that pits two capital ships against each other in a seamless blend of space warfare and tactical infantry combat. Pilots coordinate strikes with invading infantry in order to take down the behemoth capital ships from both the inside and out.

Cinematic Battles between Capital Ships on battlefields as large as 32768 cubic kilometers
Four game types providing great gameplay variety
Choose between ataining victory on foot by capturing the enemy's subsystems, or be a pilot and bomb vital systems from space.
Fast and Furious dogfights between Fighters and other Tactical Craft in deep space. Escort you gunships to deliver a squad of marines to the enemy hangar.
A True Space Experience. Cut your ship's engines and drift in the frictionless void of space.
Action-Packed ground battles. Seize decks of your enemy's ship, controlling or disabling their shields, weapons... Fight off the enemy and work as a team, fulfilling the role of one of many classes with an array of unique weapons at your disposal.
Achieve Victory by destroying the enemy capital ship inside and out.
A Complete Story behind the Eternal Silence universe, released chapter by chapter as a novella is available online
