A decent battlestar dramatica game would be awesome.

There's also "I've found her" but you play as a fighter pilot.

X3 is very sandboxy as well, but you really need to the patches and mods for it to be actually fun and playable. I played it with keyboard + mouse just fine.

really? i bought it a few years ago when it first came out, and was very excited.  but i couldnt get through the training dogfights with keyboard + mouse, and the online community suggested it was unplayable without a joystick.  im not the best gamer in the world, but im a wing-commander and Falcon and Privateer and Freespace and A-10 and Aces over Pacific fucking veteran, so i supposed i should have SOME ability to play a space shooter.

maybe i just have to try again.  or, you know, finally get around to buying a joystick.  my current computer doesnt have a port to plug my old thrustmaster into :(

Homeworld and it's sequel,  MoO2 (or 1 but not 3) and XWing vs Tie Fighter...

XWing v Tie you don't really control the capitol ships, but throwing 6 ISDs versus 6 Mon Cal Cruisers flying ships in between is hellah fun.

To be honest, some digging could probably find you some starwars based battlefield mods (AKA NOT battlefront) that gave you some of the 'each player does a different role on the ship' feel

Hey, MoO 3 is nice. It's not just a spreadsheet on 'roids. MoO3 has been optimized for macromanaging, whilst most people seam like they want to control every single aspect of each planet. It's possible, sure, but you'll find yourself finishing one turn in half an hour.

Must agree about MoO3; it's probably my favorite of the three. But it's very different from its predecessors; it's actually trying to be more of an empire sim rather than a miromanager's fantasy.

If you want to meddle in the details, you can, but you'll find it's very expensive in terms of time, so unless you're a really hardcore MM'er, you'll probably restrict such intervention to dire necessity... which fits well with the game's design philosophy.

It made me wonder what Battlestar Dramatica would look like though...

It had better. I imagine somebody like Toady is out there thinking of a way to make it work. Somehow.

What exactly IS puzzle pirates? I couldn't gather much from the site without installing the game. Some kind of MMO SM's Pirates! variant with puzzle minigames?

Basically you travel the seas and recruit random people to man your ship. Now ships are not terribly expensive, but not everybody has them thanks to the fact that you need a crew. But anyway, the crew man various stations to do different things on the ship, and how well they do is reflected in how well the ship does. One person bails in a bejeweled clone minigame, some people make the ship go faster manning the sails in a teteris clone minigame, and a bunch more for producing goods. Then there is plundering other people trading trade goods around.

Like that, except without the minigames. Players will either man fighters, turrets or man the big cannons. Then there is the captain, who sees everything going on and pilots the ship itself.

That will be an amazing game when it comes out.

I am standing by my use of the word 'when'.
