[40d] - can't trade items in an artifact bin

This looks similar to bug #140 - masterpiece bins.  I had a carpenter go fey, and make an artifact highwood bin.  This wound up assigned to a leather stockpile.  The artifact bin will not show up on the trade good mover screen.  The only active mandate was a prohibition against exporting lead.

It's impossible to trade artifacts. Thus, they don't even show up in the trading screen.

You might know this already, but I think the point was that he wanted to trade the items in the bin.

But then it wouldn't really belong in the bug section.

The move goods screen does not allow you to choose individual items if they are within a container, but rather the container. Thus, if the container itself is not allowed to be listed in the move goods screen, it is expected behavior that it (and thus its content) doesn't show.

If anything, this may be perceived as a design flaw in that bin and barrel artifacts may be used by dwarves without the player's consent and thus clog up trade.

As for the fix under the current circumstances, there is no alternative to simply getting the items out of the bin and into another one.

How, exactly, is that not a bug?  It's a substantial departure from what any reasonable user would expect (ie, goods that I might want to trade will not be put in a container I can't trade).

Hi!

Well, the problem is that anything your fortress produces can be traded and some things get good prices. The traders even offer good money for stone blocks, so if you don't want to do crafts, you could even sell those.

So, if the game was supposed not to use the artifact bin for anything that may be traded, it would effectively mean the game should never use the artifact bin at all. After all, if you placed ammo in it, you may suddenly get a real good offer for ammo, produce steel bolts, encrust them with gems - and then have them stuck in the artifact bin as the traders leave, missing a chance for major profit.

In addition, the game does not violate its own mechanisms (artifacts can not be moved to the trade depot, period), so it is not "broken".

I agree, though, that it is rather inconvenient and can be called a design flaw, but I do not see how it can be labelled a "bug".

Anyhow, this incident is a good reminder for us to be very careful if we end up with an artifact bin or barrel (^_^;;

Deathworks is right - this is not a bug it is ... eeh ... feature. Hopefuly future releases will be less rich on this feature.

Anyway very good thing to know. Try making one stockpile for your trade goods, set it on 0 bins and cancel stockpile square where your artifact bin is. When everything is moved out of your bin, make 1x1 furniture store just for this bin. After it is taken away, forbid it and set your stockpiles as they were at begining. Hopefuly your artefact bin will be safely hidden and no one will use it again.

Hello!

I agree that it would be nicer if artifacts were not protected against getting moved to the trade depot but would automatically deactivate 't'rade and 'o'ffer when selected in the trade menu - just as foreign goods automatically deactivate 'o'ffer the moment you select them. Having an artifact in a bin and then always seeing it left behind when the bin is moved actually has annoyed me quite a bit (^_^;;

Anyhow, the reason I post is because I wanted to confirm what I noticed myself about moving items from bins:

When I relocated my initial finished goods stockpile to its real location, I did not undesignate the old stockpile but instead changed its settings, turning it into a 'bars/blocks' stockpile instead (I needed a lot of those). To my great dismay, I found that my dwarves did not pick up the 'finished goods bins' but rather transported each single item out of the bin, leaving the bin in the stockpile to be used for bars/blocks now.

So, it seems that you could empty a bin simply by changing its stockpile into something not needing additional capacity but which can use bins while offering an alternative stockpile for the bin's content.

I just recently noticed, so I was a bit reluctant about mentioning it (I wasn't sure whether I understood it correctly).

Mmmmhhhh, come to think of it, it would be nice if you could place bins and barrels as inactive furniture just like statues. After all, dwarves may appreciate that awesome artifact bin in their dining hall.

BTW, do the quality restrictions for stockpiles also affect the bins/barrels?

Nope, there's no way to set the type or quality of furniture automatically brought to help manage stockpiles. This goes for bags, bins, and barrels. I wanted to use only metal bins in my metal bar stockpiles near the volcanoe and the sinuous yellow menace :|

Perhaps a better solution would be, you can select it and try to offer/trade it, but the merchant says, "I don't have nearly enough guards to bring that anywhere!" or something to similar effect and deselects it, similar to a counteroffer. Better than buttons just randomly being disabled with no explanation.
