Air Shaman GnukTu looked grimly out of the window of his cabin. They were nearing their destination; the spacefarers said this world was blessed by the gods and that our lives here would be very interesting'. They seemed to think that the survival of the followers of Neuc GIe was a joking matter. Never mind. They had accepted gold well enough, and despite their protests, the instant towers had been loaded into the cargo bay.
A rasping voice proclaimed that all passengers wishing to land on Gydres were to prepare for disembarking. GnukTu sighed and gathered his belongings; his summoning materials, a bag of clothing, and an ancient staff, passed down by the high mages of Neuc GIe since time immemorial. Now he held the staff; for he was the highest ranking air mage left.
The captain spoke jollily to Gnuk, explaining landing procedures and how they were to offload the towers.
And where would you like to land, my good man? he spoke in a cheerful tone.
Suddenly Gnuk was struck by divine knowledge.
On the dark side, there is a place. You will recognise it, for it is warmer than the surrounding lands
The captain nodded, and consulted the hologram of the planet before him.
You refer to this area; we have noted it. It is a.... excellent place to land.
He barked orders, and several people started pulling levers and spinning wheels. The planet grew as the ship flew closer, then the view went red.
Just entering the atmosphere, wont be a minute! the captain explained to the terrified Aviators.
Soon the view cleared, and they looked upon a sea surrounded by fertile grasslands and forests, with mountains reaching to the skies.
By that river, near those mountains Gnuk spoke, acting on his gods orders.
The Aviators thanked the captain one by one, and as the spaceship lifted off, they quickly began to setup up the towers. A classical model, for setting up outposts quickly, they consisted of lightweight wooden beams, which interlocked quickly into a three story tower, whilst leaving room for expansion. The five towers were set up quickly, and beds were set up on the top floors, food and drink was stored on the second. Before dawn broke, all were sitting on the roofs, and Turak the wind master had calmed the wind, so that they could speak.
GnukTu stood up, and addressed the people.
People! Have no fear! Last night, I did not choose to land here for no reason! I hear the voice of Neuc GIe, and he assured me that here, we can survive! We should not dwell in the past, our homeworld is gone. Neuc GIe has told me that this world shall be our new home. So come, people, let us make it ours! We have settled next to a fertile river; farmers; set up your farms; fishers; catch ye fish. Those who are neither fishers nor farmers; aid them!
Mages; we shall divine the flows of magic in this world tomorrow, and I shall see if I can summon some Djinni to aid our defense against predators.
Now, I know we did this before we boarded the ship, but I think we should hold a census. On this strange world it is important to know everyones skills.
GnukTu spoke to each of the Aviators; writing down short descriptions of each. Most were labourers; farmers, lumberjacks, fishermen. There were a few carpenters, some architects, and a mason, who was excited, because of the advantageous strata of the area. Gnuk calmed him, explaining that stone quarrying would have to wait until they had the resources to build stone towers, which might take years.
The leaders of the small community were obvious; himself; a medium level shaman. He had been trained in the college of summoners on the old world, and had ample experience in summoning. He had worked as a teacher in the college; thus he had acquired the skill of leadership. He had led the fleeing party; he had decided to board the space ship, rather than attempt to settle on their old world. His actions had made him unpopular with some, but most people loved him
Turak; a low level wind master; the second best mage in the party. He was frustrated because he never could get promoted at home; this was what led to him jumping on the idea of a new settlement. He may not be able to lift armies through the sky, but he would be able to deliver fortunate weather to their new home, and perhaps raise some of the children as new mages.
Yiop, the merchant. He had been a frutang trader on the old world; and was distressed at the fact that frutang did not appear to grow here. However, his pleasant voice and diplomatic nature was very useful, indeed without it they would not have been able to afford passage to this world.
Fang, the Community planner. When the council of the last city decided to send off this survival party (just on time, as it happened, for the city was destroyed the next day), fang was selected to go with them. Fang had overseen the construction of many villages, and he had the knowledge required to make temporary soldiers, hunters, explorers or builders out of anybody. Unfortunately, he did not agree with Gnuks actions, and as such was very uncooperative. Also his skills assume on new immigrants arriving with plenty of supplies within a month; indeed he seemed to be going quite mad at the prospect of this not happening.
Sergeant Hut, the soldier. Himself and ten soldiers were the parties military might; they were fleeing through allied lands, so they were not expecting attack. A good leader, an excellent marksman, and also a dabbling mage, he was the party's other magic user. Unfortunately, he had gone into shock when they forced him on the spacecraft, and Gnuk had to talk to him like a child to for half an hour to explain the situation.
When the census was over, Gnuk made a list of the results.
People:
- 17 farmers
- 12 fishermen
- 12 lumberjacks
- 6 carpenters
- 8 architects/towerbuilders
- 1 mason
- 11 soldiers
- 2 mages
- 4 merchants/traders
- 4 bowyers/fletchers
- 2 metalworkers
- 4 clerks
- 7 potters
- 5 Others; artists, and craftsmen
95 total.
Inventory:
Food supplies to last 1-2 months.
5 towers (set up, soon to be permanent)
Equipment for everyone. No extra equipment, baring weapons.
Leather armour and bows for 20 more soldiers.
With the census finished and the results tallied, Gnuk spent the rest of the day helping the architects fix up the last bits of the towers, and summoned a few minor air spirits to help with the dangerous task of setting up the rope bridges between the roofs.
The next day, he, Turak and Hut tested the magical flows, and found them normal, although perhaps overly active for an uninhabited world. They decided that there would be no risk in performing higher level magics, so Turak went to summon a cool breeze for the people to work in, and banished the clouds to provide light for their works. Gnuk claimed a tower to practice magic on, and painstakingly drew the required circles, and affixed the candle holders in tactical locations. Swiftly he contacted an array of Djinni, powerful war spirits, and commanded them to scout the area for danger.
Over time, the settlement flourished. A defensive palisade was constructed, the fields were made, and fishermens rafts covered the river. When food supplies were secured, expansion was considered, and the lumberjacks were sent to cut down the local trees. But the lumberjacks cast begging eyes towards the thick jungles on the horizon, and eventually, they sent out a party, consisting of the lumberjacks, the soldiers, two carpenters and an architect. They were given food, and they set off down river to scan the jungles for danger, and set up a small lumber camp.
With good cheer they set off with two rafts in tow, hoping that they would return swiftly with lumber weighing them down.
