Hmmm...
Interesting.  Turning off part of the virus scan did seem to help.  It won't drop FPS if paused anymore.  If I get very many dwarfs doing much of anything it drops again though.  I downloaded a CPU moniter device though that shows how much of the CPU I am using.  When it is below 50% then everything is fine.  It is once it gets above 50% that it panics and drops the FPS down to close to nothing.  Much dwarf activity will habitually make it go over 50%.

Lots of people have to play in 2x2 areas for it to be playable and fun, I'm afraid.

I just wish I didn't have stupid vista.  I think that is the problem.  I am trying to turn off all the frivolous(sp?) astetic features to see if that will help.  I've also put in a 8gb PSP memory stick and set the computer to use the excess space on that as well.

Currently, it is defragging my computer.  Hopefully this will help...>_>

Ack you need to try upgrading to XP pro :)

Find a copy of xp pro, download your drivers, back up everything, format your hard drive, unplug the internet, install xp pro.

Then download

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

Then goto:

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

To learn what services to turn off.

After that make sure you have no more then 20 processes running, turn off automatic updates, system restore, that remote user acess BS.

Then you should be good to go.

Got anymore questions ICQ me

I would absolutely love to switch to XP, trust me.  Alas, I've only ever heard complaints from those who have tried to change from Vista to XP though and I would rather not ruin my laptop (It is the only one I have that I can download things on).

Still defragging...

The defrag seemed to help some.  It stayed at a fairly constant 80 FPS with about 25 dwarfs running around doing various jobs for about a half hour.  Then an elven ambush took place and destroyed 4/5ths of my fortress before my little dwarfs fought them off.  Then it stayed constant at 80 for another half hour.  I'm not sure if it fixed it though.  Stupid vista sucking my RAM...>_>

I had the same problem (3.2GHz dual core desktop, 1.5GB RAM). Then I got 40d9 and genned a new world. The problem was fixed, so long as I kept partial printing and the other two settings off. I have a GeForce series 5 graphics card, which doesn't work well with partial printing.

This fort was utterly decimated by the elf ambush (Though they did manage to kill all but one of the enemies when they all joined the military and swarmed the elfs one at a time...

I'll see if 40d9 will help...

What were the other two options you are reffering to...?

The ones directly under partial printing. They go with partial printing.

I think it's your CPU.
Dwarf Fortress isn't threaded, so it can only use one of your two cores to begin with.
It's also optimized for an Intel Pentium 3, whereas your CPU is an AMD, one of Intel's competitors.
2.00GHz even on a P3/P4/C2/C2D/C4 probably isn't going to run DF very well anyway...

A quick last question.

Why does my computer take a half hour (During which time it runs just fine) to realize that it doesn't have the capabilities to play the game...?

That is the main reason I don't think it's what jaybud4 said. The fact it works for a time implies your system can handle it.

I'd suggest installing a temperature monitor and seeing if it's over heating and being throttled back. However is it only DF that does this or do other games slow down as well?
